LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Meyda
Lighting

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
achievements of those individuals and businesses which substantially
contribute to the economic vitality of their communities and the entire
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize the
milestones of those businesses which serve the citizens and businesses
of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 40th Anniversary of Meyda Lighting; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1974 by Ida and Meyer Cohen, what started as a
hobby for the couple has evolved into a nationally recognized American
lighting manufacturer; and
WHEREAS, Meyda Lighting, a custom and decorative lighting company,
creates beautiful lighting for homes and businesses across the nation,
and around the globe; and
WHEREAS, Today, Meyda Lighting is still a family-run business, with
the Cohens' son, Robert, at the helm; and
WHEREAS, Nearly two decades ago, Meyda Tiffany acquired Quality Bent
Glass Company which created original lighting fixtures, including the
famous Coca-Cola chandeliers, and supplied them to Tiffany Studios in
New York City in the early 1990s; currently, Meyda Lighting utilizes the
Quality Bent Glass Company's original tools, molds, and techniques to
create nostalgic lighting products; and
WHEREAS, In the 1970s and 1980s, Meyda Tiffany captured the popular
Tiffany market with authentic reproductions, interpretations, and
stained glass originals; lamps, chandeliers, wall sconces, and windows
were offered including the famous Wisteria, the well-known Mini Tiffa-
nies, and the original Meyer stained glass lanterns; Pond Lily, Quality
Bent Glass, and Precious Memories mottled glass fringed lamps were also
highlighted; and
WHEREAS, As the business grew and evolved, and in an effort to lower
costs to create Tiffany styled products which were more affordable for a
broader market, Meyda Lighting developed strong cooperative relation-
ships with several small handicraft workshops overseas; the company's
designers work very closely with these stained glass studios to maintain
the high level of quality to its customers; and
WHEREAS, Meyda Lighting expanded its line into other styles including
Mission, southwest, deco, nouveau, contemporary and modern; among its
latest innovations is the world's largest LED free standing chandelier
featured in the Stanley Theatre in Utica, New York, and the award-win-
ning Chandel-Air, which combines custom lighting with fan technology;
and
WHEREAS, In the mid-1990s, Meyda Lighting purchased Mecco Art, a metal
art studio, and utilizes its equipment and manufacturing techniques to
produce spectacular custom crafted lighting and decor under the Meyda
Custom Lighting brand; and
WHEREAS, Under the Meyda Lighting brand, thousands of decorative
styles are offered through fine dealers, and many designs are inspired
by the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany, Dirk Van Erp, Gustav Stickley,
and other masters, as well as the Arts and Crafts, Rustic, Gothic,
Revival, and Contemporary themes; and
WHEREAS, Meyda Lighting's extensive line includes table and floor
lamps, ceiling pendants, chandeliers, outdoor lighting, wall sconces,

stained glass windows, fireplace screens, billiard/kitchen island
fixtures, novelty items, and more; and
WHEREAS, With many years of designing and manufacturing expertise,
Meyda Lighting has developed innovations, technologies, and value engi-
neering which transcend architectural lighting for any budget or econo-
my; and
WHEREAS, Today, Robert Cohen and his wife, Ellie, continue to manage
the company with their sons, Chet, Max, and Ben, by their side; under
their able leadership, the company produces an industry-leading product
development program that creates dozens of new lighting designs every
week; and
WHEREAS, Meyda Lighting retains a diverse group of designers and engi-
neers that create custom fixtures, lamps, windows, and accessories to
meet the exact specifications of any residential or commercial project,
and continues to implement one of the industry's most extensive product
development programs; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges this exceptional business and its contributions to the local and
State economies, fully confident that it will continue to enjoy the
sparkling successes it has experienced thus far; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Meyda Lighting; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Robert Cohen.
