LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Kelly M. Murphy upon the occasion of
being named the first female Chief of the Tarrytown Volunteer Fire
Department on April 8, 2016
WHEREAS, The firefighters of New York State are renowned throughout the
Nation; their reputation is synonymous with excellence in the arduous
field of fire protection and prevention; and
WHEREAS, Since the early days of "teapot steamers," the volunteer
firefighter has been the cornerstone of our great Nation's efforts to
spare us from the ravages of fire; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to commend Kelly M. Murphy
upon the occasion of being named the first female Chief of the Tarrytown
Volunteer Fire Department; she was officially sworn in to this esteemed
position at its Annual Meeting on Friday, April 8, 2016; and
WHEREAS, A native of the Village of Tarrytown, New York, Kelly M.
Murphy graduated from Sleepy Hollow High School in 1997; she earned her
bachelor's degree in Physical Education, and a master's degree in Health
Education; today, she continues to take classes to further her knowledge
in her profession; and
WHEREAS, Along with her duties as an officer at the fire department,
Kelly M. Murphy works for the New York City Department of Education
(NYCDOE) as a Middle School Physical Education/Health Teacher in the
Washington Heights section of Manhattan; and
WHEREAS, Thirty-eight-year-old Kelly M. Murphy is proud to hold the
distinction of being the first female Chief in Tarrytown Volunteer Fire
Department's history; in this capacity, she will lead and supervise 150
fellow firefighters from 2016-2017; and
WHEREAS, Chief Kelly M. Murphy is committed to ensuring that the
department's equipment needs are met by providing training and encourag-
ing more volunteers to join the department; and
WHEREAS, In August of 2003, Kelly M. Murphy joined the Tarrytown Fire
Department; rising through the ranks she has served in numerous leader-
ship positions such as 1st Assistant Chief, 2nd Assistant Chief, Captain
for three years, and Lieutenant for three years; in addition, she has
been a vital member of the Standard Operating Guideline Committee, and
held the position of both Lieutenant and Yeoman on the Department's
Marine 5 unit; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to the firefighting profession, Kelly M. Murphy has
successfully completed many fire training courses and has been a company
training officer for several years, supporting her company officers with
various exercises and drills; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable woman also serves as a lifeguard and teaches
swimming lessons; in addition, she is a Birthday Party Coordinator for
the Family YMCA at Tarrytown and holds the title of Camp Director for
the Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow Day Camp; and
WHEREAS, Volunteer firefighters and fire departments not only provide
the critical service of fire protection, but also engage in other activ-
ities of great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others
and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with family
and friends to respond to the signal that a neighbor is in need; Fire
Chief Kelly M. Murphy is such a firefighter; for over 12 years, this
volunteer has heroically performed, above and beyond the call of duty,
those responsibilities which define the task of fire protection; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Kelly M. Murphy upon the occasion of being named the first
female Fire Chief of the Tarrytown Volunteer Fire Department on April 8,
2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Chief Kelly M. Murphy.
