LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of
O'Scugnizzo Pizzeria of Utica, New York, to be celebrated August 7, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
businesses and individuals who are devoted to the welfare of the commu-
nity and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to honor and pay just tribute
to those who work to better their local community and work hard to keep
a local tradition alive; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commemorate the
100th Anniversary of O'Scugnizzo Pizzeria of Utica, New York, to be
celebrated on Thursday, August 7, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Eugeno Burlino emigrated from an area around Naples, Italy,
to East Utica in the late 1800s, where he worked as a pastry chef;
however, to supplement his income, he also attended the frequent feasts
held in the predominately Italian area and sold simple pies made by his
wife: dough, sauce and Romano cheese, or olive oil and anchovy, today
we call it tomato pie; and
WHEREAS, While at the feasts, Eugeno Burlino would carry around a big
pan, and people would call out, 'Hey, scugnizzi', which meant 'street
urchin' in Italian which translated to O'scugnizzo; and
WHEREAS, In 1914, Eugeno Burlino opened a little shop to sell pizzas
and named it O'Scugnizzo; since its humble beginnings, each generation
has added its own contributions to O'Scugnizzo Pizzeria, keeping the
business successful for the past 100 years; and
WHEREAS, When Eugeno Burlino died in 1958, his son, Angelo "Chops"
Burlino took over, and after a couple of years, moved O'Scugnizzo Pizze-
ria to its current location at 614 Bleecker Street, Utica, New York, and
expanded the menu to offer sandwiches as well as salads; and
WHEREAS, Today, Angelo "Chops" Burlino's sons, Steven and Mike, are
the present owners and operators; they expanded into offering licensing
agreements where the business would carry the O'Scugnizzo Pizzeria name
and receive the main ingredients from headquarters to offer the same
delicious O'Scugnizzo Pizza; in the past decade, Mike's son suggested
bottling the pizza sauce and selling pizzas over the internet to Utica
natives who have relocated, a move which has proved to be immensely
successful; and
WHEREAS, Some call it the upside down pizza, the pizza with the sauce
on top, the Burlino family calls it O'Scugnizzo style pizza; after 100
years, the original recipe is still being used with the exact same
ingredients; and
WHEREAS, The Burlino family believes the key to O'Scugnizzo Pizzeria's
success is hard work, determination, maintaining the consistency of the
product and always remain true to the family roots; and
WHEREAS, As the Burlino family celebrates the pizzeria's 100th Anni-
versary, it looks to the future by planning to introduce new products
and to continue to serve their loyal customers who continue to visit and
support O'Scugnizzo Pizzeria; and
WHEREAS, The success of O'Scugnizzo Pizzeria is possible due to the
hard work and vision which started 100 years ago by Eugeno Burlino and
passed through the generations and onto the generations to come; the
business continues to maintain the promise made by Eugeno a century ago,
delivering the highest quality, most consistent product to its customers
every day and every time; and

WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges O'Scugnizzo Pizzeria's contributions to the local and State econo-
mies, fully confident it will continue to enjoy the sparkling success it
has enjoyed thus far; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of O'Scugnizzo Pizzeria of Utica, New
York, to be celebrated August 7, 2014; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Burlino family.
