LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Queens
Council on the Arts

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize organiza-
tions which serve the needs of the community and its citizens, enriching
lives through arts and culture; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 50th Anniversary of the Queens Council on the Arts to be cele-
brated on May 26, 2016, in Long Island City, New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1966, the Queens Council on the Arts was founded by Jeanne
Dale Katz with the assistance of visionary arts organizations such as
the Queens Symphony Orchestra, the Queens Opera Association, the Queens
Borough Public Library, the Oratorio Society, Queensborough Community
College, and Saint John's University; and
WHEREAS, The Queens Council of the Arts has enriched a wide range of
cultural growth and development of the arts in Queens, directly support-
ing diverse individual artists and organizations by providing grants,
professional development and education services; and
WHEREAS, Free concerts in the park were the first program created by
the organization in furthering their mission; and
WHEREAS, The Queens Museum, the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning,
and The Colden Center were assisted in their development by the Queens
Council on the Arts; and
WHEREAS, Artists benefit from programs designed to foster the creative
process such as "Lab", as well as workshops designed to enrich organiza-
tional skills such as grant writing, fundraising, and audience develop-
ment; and
WHEREAS, The Queens Council on the Arts serves Queens residents of all
ages; more than one million school children have participated in educa-
tion programs, as well as the elderly at senior centers; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those organiza-
tions which enhance the well-being and diverse cultures of their commu-
nities deserve the recognition and applause of all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Queens Council on the Arts; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Hoong Yee Lee Krakauer, Executive Director, the Queens Coun-
cil on the Arts.
