LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of John Garvey, Boy Scout
leader, Firefighter, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his
community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, John Garvey died on Monday, January 5, 2015, at the age of
80; and
WHEREAS, John Garvey was born on June 6, 1934; he and his wife raised
their three children in Wantagh, New York and he was employed as a New
York City Firefighter for 38 years, rising to the rank of Lieutenant;
and
WHEREAS, A member of the Wantagh American Legion Post 1273, John
Garvey proudly served his country during the Korean War; he also served
on the local Selective Service Board for 15 years; and
WHEREAS, For more than 45 years, John Garvey was actively involved in
the Boy Scouts of Nassau County, even after his children were out of the
program; he held many different positions including Scoutmaster of
Wantagh Troop 656 and District Chairman; and
WHEREAS, One of John Garvey's proudest accomplishments was attending
summer camp with Troop 656 for more than 20 years; in addition, he was a
member of the Sagamore Service Troop and Sagamore Master; and
WHEREAS, John Garvey was a Charter Member of the Wantagh High School
DADS Booster Club, and served as a Member of the Advisory Committee to
the Wantagh Board of Education; he also gave occupational speeches on
many occasions in the Wantagh and Seaford school districts; and
WHEREAS, Active in his community, John Garvey maintained Triangle Park
and was a Judge for the Annual Fourth of July Parade; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, he officiated PAL baseball and managed Little
League Teams; he was the Founder/Commissioner for a baseball league for
13-year-olds and umpired both high school and college baseball games, as
well as softball games at Jones Beach, and the Journal American All-Star
Game at Yankee Stadium; and
WHEREAS, John Garvey distinguished himself in his profession and by
his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, John Garvey's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, John Garvey is survived by his loving wife, Joan, two sons,
John and Scott, and one daughter, Joanne; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, John Garvey leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of John Garvey, Boy Scout leader, Firefighter, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of John Garvey.
