LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Angelica Clarke upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the Young Alumna in Political Science Award
by Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Angelica
Clarke upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the Young
Alumna in Political Science Award by the Rockefeller College of Public
Affairs & Policy, to be celebrated at its Annual Alumni Dinner & Awards
Ceremony on Friday, May 13, 2016, at the New York State Museum, Albany,
New York; and
WHEREAS, Angelica Clarke earned her Bachelor's degree in Political
Science with a concentration in International Relations from the Rocke-
feller College of Public Affairs & Policy at the University of Albany;
and
WHEREAS, After graduation, Angelica Clarke worked as a staff organizer
for the Graduate Student Employees Union/CWA 1104 based at the Universi-
ty of Albany campus; through the years, she has offered numerous work-
shops on black liberation, and understanding power and community organ-
izing for both graduate students and faculty from the University and
around the world; and
WHEREAS, Today, Angelica Clarke holds the title of Executive Director
at the Albany Social Justice Center; in this capacity, she serves as a
community organization whose interests include women of color empower-
ment, leadership development and creating mechanisms for community
control in marginalized communities; and
WHEREAS, As a founding member of Capital Area Against Mass Incarcera-
tion, Angelica Clarke is against police violence and other forms of
structural racism and is an advocate for prison reform; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Angelica Clarke upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the Young Alumna in Political Science Award by Rockefeller College of
Public Affairs & Policy; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Angelica Clarke.
