LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Kiwanis Club of Horseheads, New
York, upon the occasion of celebrating its 50th Anniversary on May 20,
2016

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those fraternal organizations of high purpose and worthy
accomplishment whose endeavors have faithfully served the welfare of the
citizens of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Kiwanis Club of Horseheads, New York, upon the occasion of celebrat-
ing its 50th Anniversary to be feted with a Gala Event on Friday, May
20, 2016, at Tanino Ristorante, Horseheads, New York; and
WHEREAS, Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to
changing the world, one child and one community at a time; and
WHEREAS, The six permanent objects of Kiwanis International are to:
give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material
values of life; encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all
human relationships; promote the adoption and the application of higher
social, business, and professional standards; develop, by precept and
example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship;
provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring
friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communi-
ties; and cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opin-
ion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness,
justice, patriotism, and goodwill; and
WHEREAS, The Kiwanis Club of Horseheads, New York, was charted on May
17, 1966, with the Elmira Kiwanis Club as its sponsor; the Club's
diverse charter members have come from all walks of life including busi-
ness, government, medical, public safety and religious; and
WHEREAS, Today, under the luminous leadership of President Caitlin
McGurgan, the Kiwanis Club of Horseheads, New York, supports numerous
youth athletic teams including Babe Ruth, Little League, Small Fry,
Lacrosse and Basketball; its efforts also include contributions of time
and talent to the Town of Horseheads Youth Bureau, the Children's Mira-
cle Network, the Chemung County Senior Games, the Steele Memorial
Library, the County ARC and UCP programs as well as the Food Pantry; and
WHEREAS, Focusing on the youth of its communities in and around Horse-
heads and Elmira Heights, the Kiwanis Club of Horseheads, New York, has
awarded numerous college scholarships to high school seniors at Edison
High School and Horseheads High School, as well as scholarships to chil-
dren at Cohen Middle School to attend the Eileen Collins Space Camp; and
WHEREAS, In addition, for nearly 20 years, the Kiwanis Club of Horse-
heads, New York, has sponsored Kiwanis Service Clubs at Edison High
School, called Key Club, and Builder's Club at Cohen Middle School; and
WHEREAS, Each year, the Kiwanis Club of Horseheads, New York, recog-
nizes community leaders through its Good Guy/Good Gal Awards program, as
well as recognizing outstanding police officers and firefighters from
Elmira Heights and Horseheads; and
WHEREAS, Historically, the Kiwanis Club of Horseheads, New York, has
hosted or participated in numerous community events such as the Chili
Cook-off and Holly Days; the organization is part of the pulse of the
community, and informs its members through weekly programs of local and
regional government and business activity and of other issues in the
community; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Kiwanis Club
of Horseheads, New York; and
WHEREAS, Organizations of singular distinction such as the Kiwanis
Club of Horseheads, New York, provide a model for enhancing the quality
of life in the community and, as such, merit the grateful praise of the
community of the State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Kiwanis Club of Horseheads, New York, upon the occasion of
celebrating its 50th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to President Caitlin McGurgan, Kiwanis Club of Horseheads, New
York.
