LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring veteran David Cano upon the occasion of
being recognized for his distinguished service to his Country as a
member of the United States Navy on May 30, 2016
WHEREAS, Members of the United States Armed Forces, who served so faith-
fully and courageously in wars in which our Nation's freedom was at
stake, as well as in the preservation of peace during peacetime, deserve
the highest commendation of this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, The dedication and sacrifices of our military personnel
ensure our continued role as a Nation which embodies the ideals of
democracy, and is a defender of liberty for peoples throughout the
world; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor veteran David
Cano upon the occasion of being recognized for his distinguished service
to his Country as a member of the United States Navy, to be celebrated
during a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 30, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Veteran David Cano is being recognized for his altruistic
efforts and unwavering support of his fellow military veterans; and
WHEREAS, As a member of the United States Navy, David Cano valiantly
served aboard the USS Ingraham (FFG-61) 'The Last and the Finest
frigate', a class of ship which is now decommissioned, home ported in
Everett, Washington; and
WHEREAS, An Information Systems Technician (IT) for four years, David
Cano reached the rank of Petty Officer Second Class; performing well
above standard, he excelled on both Petty Officer 3rd and 2nd class
advancement exams, scoring in the 99th and 98th percentiles respective-
ly, allowing him to advance; and
WHEREAS, During his first deployment in 2009, to the Gulf of Iraq,
David Cano received the Humanitarian Service Medal for Operation Pacific
Wave in recognition of his relief efforts after disaster struck the
Samoa Islands; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, this brave soldier took part in patrolling the
oil platforms in the Gulf, escorting two brand new Iranian patrol boats
through the Suez Canal, separately escorting a submarine through the
Suez Canal, and conducting anti-piracy patrols and boarding fishing
vessels in the Red Sea and near the Horn of Africa; and
WHEREAS, With a second deployment in South America, David Cano was
instrumental in the launching of Operation Martillo in support of
targeting illicit trafficking routes in coastal waters along Central
America; during this time he patrolled the area and boarded boats
suspected of drug trafficking; and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his military service, David Cano trav-
elled across the country from Washington to New York in his red Dodge
pickup truck before moving on to Pace University in pursuit of his
undergraduate degree to gain employment in the cyber security field; and
WHEREAS, David Cano arrived at Pace University in the summer of 2013,
and quickly established himself as a quintessential leader by serving as
the President of its thriving Student Veterans of America (SVA) Chapter;
and
WHEREAS, The vision provided by David Cano through the many veteran-
centric initiatives he has implemented has further enhanced the transi-
tion for veterans to the University; through the veteran transition
course, From Combat to Classroom, he naturally took the proactive initi-
ative and served as a formal peer leader to assist his peers who were
struggling with transitioning to civilian and academic life; and
WHEREAS, A true team leader and scholar, David Cano's effective oral
and written communication skills, complemented with his laid back and
pleasant social acumens, allow him to connect with students who would
otherwise struggle; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is very pleased to have this opportu-
nity to express its gratitude to the men and women of the United States
Armed Forces for their tremendous sacrifices made for our Nation and for
the benefit of all Americans; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor veteran David Cano upon the occasion of being recognized for his
distinguished service to his Country as a member of the United States
Navy on May 30, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to David Cano.
