LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Rabbi Neil Kurshan upon the occasion
of his retirement after more than 30 years of distinguished service as
Spiritual Leader of Huntington Jewish Center

WHEREAS, It is with great admiration and deepest respect that this
Legislative Body is moved to pay tribute to an eminent gentleman of
indomitable spirit and dedication, whose purposeful life and accomplish-
ments will forever stand as an inspiration to others; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Rabbi Neil
Kurshan upon the occasion of his retirement after more than 30 years of
distinguished service as Spiritual Leader of Huntington Jewish Center,
to be celebrated on Sunday, June 19, 2016; and
WHEREAS, The Huntington Hebrew Congregation of Huntington, known
locally as the Huntington Jewish Center (HJC), is a recognized and very
visible center of Jewish worship, Jewish learning, Jewish activities,
and support for Israel and the Jewish people; and
WHEREAS, In his leadership of Huntington Jewish Center, Rabbi Neil
Kurshan brought an overwhelming spirit of charity and compassion, acting
from vision and enlightenment in conducting his administrative and spir-
itual duties, while always displaying the highest standards of personal
and professional integrity and dedication; and
WHEREAS, Neil Kurshan has served as the Rabbi of the Huntington Jewish
Center for more than three decades; he received his undergraduate degree
from Princeton University and his Doctorate in Education from Harvard;
and
WHEREAS, Ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary, Rabbi Neil
Kurshan has served Conservative congregations in Port Washington and
Huntington, New York; he is the author of the acclaimed book, RAISING
YOUR CHILD TO BE A MENSCH; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his illustrious tenure, Rabbi Neil Kurshan has
been instrumental in helping members of his congregation to clarify
their understanding of the spiritual dimensions of their lives; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Alisa, and their four
children, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and
rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rabbi Neil Kurshan lives his life with great dignity and
genuine grace, always demonstrating a deep and continuing concern for
others; rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individual
for the benefit of others which he has displayed throughout his life and
throughout his leadership of the Huntington Jewish Center for many
years; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor an eminent gentleman and unparalleled spiritual leader, Rabbi Neil
Kurshan, noting the significance of his unremitting dedication and saga-
cious leadership on behalf of the Huntington Jewish Center, the communi-
ty-at-large, and the countless individuals who were sustained through
his caring benevolence; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Rabbi Neil Kurshan.
