LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Mary Washburn on the occasion of
celebrating her 100th Birthday on April 15, 2016

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Mary
Washburn upon the occasion of her 100th Birthday; she observed her mile-
stone birthday with a celebration of her life at the Time Out Lodge in
Fowler, New York; and
WHEREAS, Born on April 15, 1916, in Gouverneur, New York, Mary Wash-
burn attended Gouverneur High School and graduated in the Class of 1933;
and
WHEREAS, She belonged to a Jazz Band, Bun LaRue and his Eight Beauti-
ful Girls, which entertained throughout the local area; and
WHEREAS, Mary Washburn attended the St. Lawrence School of Nursing and
joined the Naval Reserves during World War II, where she was stationed
at Camp Perry, Williamsburg, Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Her orders were to depart for the war zone as a nurse with
the Seabees, however the war ended before her departure; and
WHEREAS, After the war, Mary Washburn attended Boston University and
graduated with a master's degree in Rehabilitation Nursing; and
WHEREAS, After graduation, she worked in the Rochester area, and even-
tually for the New York State Public Health Department, retiring at the
age of 55; and
WHEREAS, She then worked as a part-time, in-home physical therapist
with the Jefferson County Public Health Department for 18 years, retir-
ing in the 1970s; and
WHEREAS, In retirement, Mary Washburn enjoys spending time with her
nephew, Dave Spilman, playing golf, Scrabble, taking exercise classes at
the Gouverneur Recreation Center, and eating ice cream; and
WHEREAS, Mary Washburn, who resides in Hailesboro, New York, has
inspired her family with her strength and beauty and they look forward
to celebrating many more birthdays with her; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable woman, who has experienced the incredible
joys and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the
stamina and courage to savor a full life, has inspired the lives of her
many friends and family; and
WHEREAS, Mary Washburn has enriched the lives of those around her
through her joyous and sincere love for life and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Mary Washburn upon the occasion of celebrating her 100th
Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mary Washburn.
