LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Public
School 124, The Yung Wing School, on May 20, 2016
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate an enduring
pursuit of excellence in the education of the youth of this noble Empire
State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 40th Anniversary of Public School 124, The Yung Wing School,
of Chinatown, New York, to be celebrated with an Anniversary Gala on
Friday, May 20, 2016; and
WHEREAS, For four decades, The Yung Wing School has been committed to
providing an innovative and cooperative learning environment for its
students; and
WHEREAS, Public School 124 is named after Yung Wing, the first Chinese
student to attend and graduate from an American university, Yale
College, and who also sought to expand educational opportunities for
Chinese immigrants; and
WHEREAS, In the spirit of its namesake, The Yung Wing School strives
to provide exemplary education to the children of Chinatown, and to give
them the tools to thrive in today's environment; and
WHEREAS, Located in the heart of Chinatown, The Yung Wing School hosts
several events each year to celebrate and recognize the contributions of
the Asian-American community to the city and State of New York, such as
their annual Lunar New Year celebrations; and
WHEREAS, In addition, The Yung Wing School organizes an annual career
fair, exposing the youth of Chinatown to various careers, motivating
their aspirations, and sparking their imaginations; and
WHEREAS, Families and staff from The Yung Wing School have long advo-
cated for the recognition of Lunar New Year as a public school holiday
in New York City, and our victory this year is a cause of great cele-
bration for the entire Asian American community in our City and State;
and
WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, The Yung Wing School enables
its students to achieve their full potential as productive, caring,
informed human beings by providing them with a rigorous, comprehensive
education suited to their unique needs and abilities; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous direction of its Principal of more than a
decade, Alice Hom, The Yung Wing School provides programs which address
the intellectual, physical, emotional and social needs of all its
students; and
WHEREAS, This vital institution has continually demonstrated an
impressive dedication, an unparalleled devotion and an unremitting
enthusiasm for the quality of educational programs and opportunities
offered for the benefit of its faculty and students as well as for the
entire community; and
WHEREAS, The Yung Wing School is proudly aware of its distinguished
past, eager to fulfill its present commitment to parents, students and
the community, and planning with vision and purpose for the ebb and
swell of growth and change it will encounter in the years to come; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Public School 124, The Yung Wing
School, on May 20, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Alice Hom, Principal, Public School 124, The Yung Wing
School, Chinatown, New York.
