LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 5th Anniversary of The Brian
Dugan 5K Memorial Scholarship Road Race on May 19, 2016
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 5th Anniversary of The Brian Dugan 5K Memorial Scholarship
Road Race held on Thursday, May 19, 2016, in Tonawanda, New York; and
WHEREAS, The mission of The Brian Dugan 5K Memorial Scholarship Road
Race is to celebrate the life of Brian C. Dugan, a former Kenmore West
English teacher, who tragically lost his life in 2010; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of St. Joseph Collegiate Institute, Brian C. Dugan
enjoyed playing football and was a trombonist in the SJCI Jazz Lab Band;
it was during his time there and his exposure to a great teacher that he
decided teaching would be his career; and
WHEREAS, After graduating in 1991, he went to John Carroll University
in Cleveland to pursue a degree in English; here he also played on the
football team; student teaching gave him the opportunity to interact and
work with inner city kids; and
WHEREAS, Brian C. Dugan later obtained a degree as a Reading Special-
ist at the University of Buffalo and began teaching English at Kenmore
West High School in September of 1995; and
WHEREAS, His sense of humor and unique presentation of course material
in everyday terms motivated his students to want to come to class; he
genuinely cared about all of his students not only in the classroom but
in their lives outside the classroom; to many of his students, he was
the teacher they would always remember, a father figure, a role model;
and
WHEREAS, Brian C. Dugan had a gentle and patient way with persons with
disabilities; he spent time with his brother, Dan, who has special needs
and he often attended the Special Olympic Games to cheer for him; and
WHEREAS, He initiated "Men's Night Out" where he would take his sons
and brother out to do something special and so Brian easily continued
this caring and laid-back interaction with students in the Special
Education classes at Kenmore West; and
WHEREAS, Brian C. Dugan was always able to understand and communicate
with everyone he met; his sincere interest in the lives and well-being
of others and his charismatic personality drew people to him; and
WHEREAS, As a family man, Brian C. Dugan was a loving, devoted and
unselfish husband and father; he enjoyed cooking and entertaining
friends and family; his world revolved around family; and
WHEREAS, The summer before his death, Brian C. Dugan made a decision
to stop coaching modified football so he could spend more time with his
family; he wanted to be able to attend and help coach his sons' soccer
games; and
WHEREAS, Brian C. Dugan also had signed his sons up for a Fall basket-
ball league, the sport he himself enjoyed immensely, playing with
friends and associates; unfortunately, he never got to see his sons
play; and
WHEREAS, This annual Tonawanda event works to raise donations for The
Brian Dugan Scholarship Fund which assists Kenmore West High School
students in fulfilling their dreams of receiving a college education;
and
WHEREAS, A vital and active part of the community, Brian C. Dugan is
survived by his wife Ann, who supports this auspicious event as a way to
carry on the memory of the many contributions he made to the Tonawanda
community; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his wife, Brian C. Dugan is survived by their
two children, Jackson Thomas and Aidan Daniel Dugan; his parents, Robert
and Mary Dugan; one brother Daniel; father and mother-in-law, James and
Donna Christmann; his brother-in-law, Daniel (Samantha); and grandmoth-
er-in-law, Dorothy; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends;
and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Brian C. Dugan left behind a legacy of caring six years ago
which will long endure the passage of time and will remain as a comfort-
ing memory to all he served and befriended; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when events of
such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our attention, they
should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 5th Anniversary of The Brian Dugan 5K Memorial Scholar-
ship Road Race on May 19, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Ann Dugan, and The Brian Dugan Scholarship Fund.
