LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Massena
Salvation Army
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals that are devoted to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 50th Anniversary of the Massena Salvation Army, which was
celebrated on October 18 and 19, 2014, which included the dedication of
their new building; and
WHEREAS, The founder of the Salvation Army was a Methodist minister
named William Booth; in 1865, he began preaching to the poor in London's
east-end; in 1878, the organization's name became "The Salvation Army";
and
WHEREAS, In October 1879, the Salvation Army established its ministry
in the United States in New York City; and
WHEREAS, Eighty-five years after the Salvation Army was established in
the United States, the Massena Mission was founded in 1964; the officer
in charge was Captain Norman Rock, assisted by his wife and later Major,
Elsie, with the help of Advisory Board Chair Arthur Westcott, and Vice
Chair Sherman Horsely, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, The evolution of the Salvation Army's first 50 years in
Massena is a success story of people helping people; it was their faith,
determination and dedication that paved the way for The Salvation Army
as it is known today; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Massena Salvation Army has contin-
ually worked to expand its services and programs under the faithful
leadership of Captains Russell and Cynthia Crowsen; and
WHEREAS, In addition, the Massena Salvation Army offers services based
on the needs of the community including a soup kitchen and food pantry,
as well as several programs to help senior citizens, the sick and home-
bound, youths, teens, men, young adults and women; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when an organ-
ization of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our atten-
tion, it should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Massena Salvation Army; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Massena Salvation Army.
