LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Gene D. Block upon the occasion of his
induction into the Monticello Central School District Hall of
Distinction on November 2, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding individuals whose professional lives, personal endeavors and
community service are an example and inspiration to their colleagues,
friends, and family; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Gene
D. Block upon the occasion of his induction into the Monticello Central
School District Hall of Distinction, to be celebrated at its 2nd Annual
Induction Ceremony on Sunday, November 2, 2014, at the Arnold Packer
Hughes Auditorium, Monticello High School, Monticello, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Hall of Distinction was established in 2012 by the Board
of Education to honor highly successful graduates, former students and
former employees who have achieved distinction, outstanding accomplish-
ment, or have made a significant contribution within their school, fami-
ly, career, community and/or personal life; and
WHEREAS, An esteemed biologist, academic and inventor, Gene D. Block
is an Alumnus of Monticello High School, Class of 1966; he currently
serves as Chancellor of the University of California, Los Angeles; and
WHEREAS, Well known in the scientific community, Gene D. Block has
been the recipient of numerous scientific awards and accolades, and was
the first to demonstrate that single retinal neurons can function as
circadian (24 hour) clocks; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, his most recent research is focused on the
effects of aging on the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus, the brain region
containing the primary mammalian biological clock; and
WHEREAS, Also known for his inventions, Gene D. Block has created a
non-contact respiratory monitor for the prevention of Sudden Infant
Death Syndrome; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Gene D. Block has displayed through-
out his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Gene D. Block upon the occasion of his induction into the Monti-
cello Central School District Hall of Distinction on November 2, 2014;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Gene D. Block.
