LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending The Albany Academy in Albany, New
York, upon the occasion of celebrating its 203rd commencement on June
14, 2016

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of commitment and high achievement whose
purpose and endeavors prove a dedication to the pursuit of excellence in
the education of the youth of this noble Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
The Albany Academy in Albany, New York, upon the occasion of celebrating
its 203rd commencement on Tuesday, June 14, 2016; and
WHEREAS, The 203rd graduating class from The Albany Academy will
commemorate this auspicious milestone with a class gift of the outdoor
learning center; and
WHEREAS, In March of 1813, The Albany Academy opened its doors for the
first time at its original location in Albany, which is now known as
Academy Park; the Academy was the first boys day school to be
constructed in the Capital Region; and
WHEREAS, In 1870, in response to a lack of military preparation insti-
tutions in the North during the American Civil War, The Albany Academy
adopted the Battalion Leadership Program, instructing the "cadets" in
military procedure, and the art of leadership; and
WHEREAS, In 1931, the school moved from its original downtown building
to its current location on the corner of Hackett Boulevard and Academy
Road, allowing all grades enrolled in The Albany Academy, pre-Kindergar-
ten-12, to be housed and schooled under the same roof; and
WHEREAS, The red-brick Academy building's marble cornerstone was laid
by then Governor, and future President Franklin D. Roosevelt; and
WHEREAS, In 2007, The Board of Trustees announced that The Albany
Academy and The Albany Academy for Girls would merge into The Albany
Academies; and
WHEREAS, The incredible curriculum offers students the opportunity to
earn college credits, engage in internships, and learn more about
careers in their chosen field; and
WHEREAS, Exceptional students are given the option of enrolling in
numerous advanced placement (AP) courses including, French, Biology,
Physics and Chemistry; and
WHEREAS, For over two centuries, The Albany Academy has strived to
ensure that all of its students have access to a high-quality education
which prepares them for the rigors of college and the workforce; today
approximately 840 students are enrolled at The Albany Academies; and
WHEREAS, The steadfast and unyielding commitment of parents, educators
and administrators to provide the highest quality education for students
has become the hallmark and tradition of The Albany Academies; and
WHEREAS, The Albany Academy is proudly aware of its distinguished
past, eager to fulfill its present commitment to parents, students and
the community, and planning with vision and purpose for the ebb and
swell of growth and change it will encounter in the years to come; now
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend The Albany Academy in Albany, New York, upon the occasion of
celebrating its 203rd commencement on June 14, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Headmaster and The Board of Trustees, of The Albany Acad-
emy.
