LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Gabriel Curcione upon the occasion of
his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor
bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those young people within the great Empire State who have
made strong contributions to their communities and who serve as role
models for their peers; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Gabriel Curcione upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New
York State Senate; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
resolution, and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, A student at Wilson Central School, in Wilson, New York,
Gabriel Curcione will be bestowed this auspicious award for the excep-
tional volunteer work he completed to earn the Congressional Award
Silver Medal; and
WHEREAS, The Congressional Award is the United States Congress' award
for young Americans; to earn this award, students must set and accom-
plish goals in four program areas: voluntary public service, personal
development, physical fitness, and expedition/exploration; and
WHEREAS, Silver Level Congressional Award Requirements include a mini-
mum of 200 hours of voluntary service, 100 hours of personal develop-
ment, 100 hours of physical fitness, and two nights and three days of
expedition or exploration; and
WHEREAS, For his voluntary public service portion of the program,
Gabriel Curcione gave back to his community in many ways; an advocate
for military youth, he performed over 250 hours volunteering in programs
which benefitted numerous children of deployed Service Members; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable young man gave of his time and energy working
as a camp counselor at the 4-H Cornell Cooperative Extension and Opera-
tion Military Kids, where he was instrumental in the success of its Our
Military Kids awareness campaign and its Purple Up! movement; and
WHEREAS, For his personal development goal, Gabriel Curcione partic-
ipated in two learning opportunities to increase his knowledge, expand
his perspective, and improve his social skills to become a better lead-
er; and
WHEREAS, He also focused on improving his knowledge of Science, Tech-
nology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and is continually looking for new
educational opportunities which will help him grow; and
WHEREAS, Gabriel Curcione's physical fitness objective was to create a
plan that kept him active at least two days a week for five hours each
week; he found that his endurance has increased, and his overall
personal fitness has improved; and
WHEREAS, For his expedition/exploration component, Gabriel Curcione
spent three days and two nights camping and scouting for deer and turkey
in the Bucktooth State Forest; he planned the trip from start to finish
focusing on being totally self-sufficient; and
WHEREAS, Guided by his advisor, Major Thomas A. Scozzafava, Gabriel
Curcione successfully set and met challenging goals; with a high stand-
ard of accomplishment, he represents the best development of the poten-
tial which is inherent in our most precious resource, our youth; and

WHEREAS, Gabriel Curcione, in receiving this distinguished honor, may
take just pride in the inspiration and contribution to the spirit of
excellence he brings to his family, friends, community and Wilson
Central School District; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Gabriel Curcione upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Gabriel Curcione.
