LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Correction Officer Kenneth McFadden upon
the occasion of receiving a medal from the New York State Department of
Corrections and Community Supervision for his extraordinary service
WHEREAS, The quality and sanctity of community life are cherished values
that are worthy of safeguarding, and this Legislative Body is hereby
moved to honor those exemplary public servants who devote their lives to
preserving and protecting such values; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor and
recognize Correction Officer Kenneth McFadden of Auburn, New York, upon
the occasion of receiving a medal from the New York State Department of
Corrections and Community Supervision for his extraordinary service to
be celebrated at an awards ceremony in Albany, New York, on June 8,
2016; and
WHEREAS, On May 13, 2015, Correction Officer Kenneth McFadden was
conducting his duties on the 7U Secure Unit at Upstate University Hospi-
tal in Syracuse, when he was confronted with a life-threatening situ-
ation; and
WHEREAS, An inmate from the Cayuga Correctional Facility in Moravia
was having a scheduled medical consultation with a doctor at Upstate
University Hospital when he abruptly raised his right arm and lunged
toward the doctor with a sharp metal object that resembled an icepick-
type weapon and subsequently stabbed the doctor twice; and
WHEREAS, Without hesitation, Correction Officer Kenneth McFadden threw
himself in between the inmate and the doctor, taking the brunt of the
assault and suffering five stab wounds to his head and shoulder; both
Correction Officer McFadden and the doctor were injured, but would
recover; and
WHEREAS, After a violent struggle, Correction Officer Kenneth McFad-
den, along with the assistance of a second officer who rushed into the
hospital room, was able to restrain the inmate and avert what could have
been a deadly situation; and
WHEREAS, In keeping with the finest traditions of the New York State
Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Correction Officer
Kenneth McFadden has distinguished himself by his dedication and his
exemplary service to protect the citizens of the Central New York commu-
nity; and
WHEREAS, The courageous and dedicated efforts of public servants, such
as Correction Officer Kenneth McFadden, who devote themselves to
protecting the lives of others, are worthy of the praise and recognition
of this Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Correction Officer Kenneth McFadden upon the occasion of receiving
a medal from the New York State Department of Corrections and Community
Supervision for his quick and selfless actions; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Correction Officer Kenneth McFadden.
