LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Correction Officer Gregory Edgar upon
the occasion of receiving a medal from the New York State Department of
Corrections and Community Supervision for his extraordinary service

WHEREAS, The quality and sanctity of community life are cherished values
that are worthy of safeguarding, and this Legislative Body is hereby
moved to honor those exemplary public servants who devote their lives to
preserving and protecting such values; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Correction Officer Gregory Edgar of Auburn, New York, upon the occasion
of receiving a medal from the New York State Department of Corrections
and Community Supervision for his extraordinary service to be celebrated
at an awards ceremony in Albany, New York, on June 8, 2016; and
WHEREAS, On May 13, 2015, Correction Officer Gregory Edgar was
conducting his duties on the 7U Secure Unit at Upstate University Hospi-
tal in Syracuse, when he acted quickly and stepped in to help avert a
deadly situation in one of the hospital rooms; and
WHEREAS, An inmate from the Cayuga Correctional Facility in Moravia
was having a scheduled medical consultation with a doctor at Upstate
University Hospital when he abruptly raised his right arm and lunged
toward the doctor with a sharp metal object that resembled an icepick-
type weapon and subsequently stabbed the doctor twice; and
WHEREAS, When he heard the commotion, Correction Officer Gregory Edgar
immediately responded and ran into the room to help a fellow correction
officer subdue the inmate, while, at the same time deflecting the weapon
from stabbing a registered nurse; and
WHEREAS, Correction Officer Edgar suffered a stab wound to his hand,
but would recover; and
WHEREAS, In keeping with the finest traditions of the New York State
Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Correction Officer
Edgar has distinguished himself by his dedication and his exemplary
service to protect the citizens of the Central New York community; and
WHEREAS, The courageous and dedicated efforts of public servants, such
as Correction Officer Edgar, who devote themselves to protecting the
lives of others, are worthy of the praise and recognition of this Legis-
lative Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Correction Officer Gregory Edgar upon the occasion of receiving a
medal from the New York State Department of Corrections and Community
Supervision for his quick and selfless actions; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Correction Officer Gregory Edgar.
