LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Megan Millman upon the occasion of
being named the first female Chief of the Mountaindale Fire Department

WHEREAS, The firefighters of New York State are renowned throughout the
Nation; their reputation is synonymous with excellence in the arduous
field of fire protection and prevention; and
WHEREAS, Since the early days of "teapot steamers," the volunteer
firefighter has been the cornerstone of our great Nation's efforts to
spare us from the ravages of fire; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Megan Mill-
man upon the occasion of being named the first female Chief of the Moun-
taindale Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, In 2003, Megan Millman enjoyed visiting and assisting her
future husband at the Mountaindale Fire Department; encouraged to join,
she enrolled in the Basic Firefighting training course that summer; and
WHEREAS, After becoming a member of the Mountaindale Fire Department,
Megan Millman faced danger and peril without fear and performed her job
with the utmost concern and professionalism; in 2015, she responded to
152 EMT or Fire calls, while caring for three children and managing her
household; and
WHEREAS, A well-respected and hardworking firefighter, Megan Millman
quickly rose through the ranks, holding numerous leadership roles prior
to attaining the position of 1st Assistant Chief; in 2016, she was
elected to her present title of Fire Chief, where she leads and super-
vises her fellow firefighters; and
WHEREAS, After a few years of dedicated service to the Mountaindale
Fire Department, Megan Millman decided to become an EMT with the Depart-
ment's First Aid Squad; throughout the last nine years, she has
responded to numerous calls, successfully treating a wide range of
medical emergencies; and
WHEREAS, The Mountaindale Fire Department was established in 1923; 31
years later, the Mountaindale First Aid Squad was formed, providing a
platform for women to serve as a first responder and also qualify for
coverage under Sullivan County's workers' compensation benefits; and
WHEREAS, Much has changed since the Department's inception almost a
century ago when women were not allowed to join the fire service;
through her diligence and steadfast commitment to the Department, Megan
Millman is proud to hold the distinction of being the first female Chief
in Mountaindale Fire Department's storied history; and
WHEREAS, Volunteer firefighters and fire departments not only provide
the critical service of fire protection, but also engage in other activ-
ities of great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others
and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with family
and friends to respond to the signal that a neighbor is in need; Fire
Chief Megan Millman is such a firefighter; for over a decade, this
volunteer has heroically performed, above and beyond the call of duty,
those responsibilities which define the task of fire protection; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Megan Millman upon the occasion of being named the first female
Fire Chief of the Mountaindale Fire Department; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Chief Megan Millman.
