LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending John Federspiel upon the occasion of
his retirement after 29 years of distinguished service to New
York-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital
WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in acknowledging
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of its esteemed
residents; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend John Feder-
spiel upon the occasion of his retirement after 29 years of distin-
guished service to New York-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital to be
celebrated with a party held in his honor on Thursday, June 30, 2016, at
the Sleepy Hollow Country Club; and
WHEREAS, John Federspiel earned a master's degree in Business Adminis-
tration from Temple University, and Diplomat Status in the American
College of Health Care Executives; and
WHEREAS, John Federspiel has served for 29 years as President of New
York-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital; and
WHEREAS, John Federspiel guided the hospital through a financial turn-
around in 1991, and was instrumental in the building of the new emergen-
cy room, operating room, and laboratory space with a $27 million addi-
tion in 1995; and
WHEREAS, A $100 million renovation followed in 2010, including a four-
story, 84 bed, all-private patient tower, new, larger, state-of-the-art
operating rooms, and an expansion of its Emergency Department; and
WHEREAS, John Federspiel also oversaw the opening of the first compre-
hensive cancer center in Northern Westchester in 2011; the center offers
radiation therapy, infusion and support services to patients, all
conveniently in one location; and
WHEREAS, John Federspiel led the development of the Peter X. Kelly
Teaching Kitchen in 2014; and
WHEREAS, John Federspiel also directed the opening of off-site
locations in neighboring communities to bring the hospital's outpatient
services and physicians to local residents; and
WHEREAS, Under his distinguished tenure, New York-Presbyterian/Hudson
Valley Hospital has earned numerous honors; it was the first hospital in
the region to earn the Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence and the only
one to earn it twice; and
WHEREAS, New York-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital has also earned
the Gold Plus Award for Stroke Care from the American Heart Association
in 2013 and 2014, as well as the Guardian Of Excellence Award from Press
Ganey in 2013, 2014, and 2015 for patient satisfaction and quality clin-
ical scores; and
WHEREAS, Under his leadership, New York-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley
Hospital is one of only four hospitals in Westchester and Putnam Coun-
ties to receive an "A" grade for patient safety from Leap Frog, and was
named the safest hospital in Westchester County by Consumer Reports in
2014; and
WHEREAS, Other distinguished honors New York-Presbyterian/Hudson
Valley Hospital has earned include "Baby Friendly" status from the World
Health Organization, Baby Friendly USA for excellence in maternity care
and breastfeeding support, a Forbes Enterprise Award for leadership and
innovative ideas, and being voted one of the best places to work in
Westchester County; and
WHEREAS, John Federspiel has received countless personal honors,
including recognition from the Arthritis Foundation, Visiting Nurse
Association of Westchester, and many other local civic organizations;
and
WHEREAS, John Federspiel also dedicates his time to "Santa's Helpers",
which he founded 19 years ago to purchase gifts for more than 1,600
Westchester children and their families; and
WHEREAS, John Federspiel is the proud father of three sons; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend John Federspiel upon the occasion of his retirement after 29
years of distinguished service to New York-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley
Hospital; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to John Federspiel.
