LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Center
for Law and Social Justice on September 23, 2016

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 30th Anniversary of the Center for Law and Social Justice, to
be celebrated on Friday, September 23, 2016, in Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1986, the Center for Law and Social Justice
consists of activists and professionals from all walks of life who
embody the spirit and aspiration of the people they serve; the organiza-
tion is a unit in the School of Professional and Community Development
at Medgar Evans College of the City University of New York; and
WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, the Center for Law and Social
Justice provides quality advocacy, training, and expert services in a
personal manner to people of African descent; and
WHEREAS, The Center for Law and Social Justice seeks to accomplish its
mission by conducting research, and initiating advocacy project and
litigation on behalf of community organizations and groups that promote
human, national, and international understanding; and
WHEREAS, This vital organization sponsors advocacy projects and liti-
gation in areas as diverse as housing and employment discrimination,
violence, public education, voting rights, immigration, and United
States human rights violations; and
WHEREAS, In addition, due to its unique combination of research,
public policy advocacy and litigation from a community-based perspec-
tive, the Center for Law and Social Justice is a focal point for
progressive activity; and
WHEREAS, Over its distinguished 30 year history, the Center for Law
and Social Justice has demonstrated continuous service to the residents
and communities which it serves; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Center for Law and Social Justice is in
direct correlation to the efforts of its members, whose involvement is,
and always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an
unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in
all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the community it serves;
and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Center for Law and
Social Justice; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Center for Law and Social
Justice on September 23, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Center for Law and Social Justice, Brooklyn, New York.
