LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 65th Anniversary of Sorge's
Restaurant
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those busi-
nesses and individuals that are devoted to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, It is also the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize
and commend those who work to better their local community and work hard
to keep a local tradition alive; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 65th Anniversary of Sorge's Restaurant, to be celebrated on
Sunday, June 12, 2016, at The Center, Corning, New York; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious event will give invited friends, family and
community members the opportunity to thank the Sorge Family for continu-
ing this Corning tradition; and
WHEREAS, In 1936, Renato (Ronnie) Sorge and his brother Remo, came to
the United States from Italy; 15 years later, on June 5, 1951, Sorge's
Restaurant opened its doors to the public on 68 West Market Street in
Corning, New York, offering delicious Italian meals prepared by Renato
and his wife, Loretta; and
WHEREAS, At the beginning, Sorge's Restaurant was a quaint spot with
just 11 booths; the restaurant expanded in 1962 when the adjacent build-
ing was purchased, and in 1968, the upstairs of both buildings was
converted into a dining room and banquet facility; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, Sorge's Restaurant has been passed through
multiple generations and it continues to be run as a family business;
and
WHEREAS, On December 27, 2008, Sorge's Restaurant sustained a devas-
tating fire which totally destroyed the building; it was torn down,
leaving only the historic front facade standing; and
WHEREAS, Keeping true to its proud traditions and history which made
the restaurant famous, Sorge's Restaurant was rebuilt and back in busi-
ness in 2010; a major focus of the reconstruction was to preserve and
carry forward important pieces of the Sorge Family history, and to blend
them into a complete renovation of the restaurant; and
WHEREAS, In addition to its authentic Italian food, Sorge's Restaurant
is also known for setting a Guinness World Record; on June 4, 2011, the
restaurant, along with assistance from the Corning community, prepared
the longest egg noodle measuring 525 feet and weighing in at 29 pounds,
nine ounces; and
WHEREAS, For 65 years, the Sorge Family has been helping the Corning
Community in numerous ways including hosting a chicken barbecue at
Costa's Airport which generates donations for local organizations, serv-
ing as a member of the Corning Chamber of Commerce, helping the communi-
ty rebuild after the 1972 flood as well as donating food to All Saints
Parish; and
WHEREAS, As the Sorge Family celebrates their 65th Anniversary, they
look to the future by continuing to service their loyal customers as
well as grow new customers to appreciate the same authentic Italian
recipes that the Corning community has enjoyed for over six decades; and
WHEREAS, The success of Sorge's Restaurant is possible because of the
hard work and vision that started 65 years ago by the Sorge brothers,
and which has passed through the generations and onto the generations to
come; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 65th Anniversary of Sorge's Restaurant; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Sorge Family.
