LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Grand
Street Settlement on Manhattan's Lower East Side

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
achievements of those organizations that substantially contribute to the
vitality and well-being of their communities and the entire Empire
State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of Grand Street Settlement on Manhattan's
Lower East Side; and
WHEREAS, Since 1916, Grand Street Settlement has endeavored to expand
opportunities for low-income families by providing resources necessary
to become productive and active citizens of the communities; and
WHEREAS, Over the past century, Grand Street Settlement has supported
the Lower East Side community, providing a comprehensive range of
programs, including adult education classes, after school tutoring, and
senior services; and
WHEREAS, Born out of the settlement house movement, Grand Street
Settlement continues to serve as a neighborhood anchor, always ready to
lift up those in need and lend a helping hand to our most vulnerable;
and
WHEREAS, Always attentive to its community's safety, Grand Street
Settlement has acted as a key partner in dozens of advocacy campaigns
focused on anti-violence and improving the Lower East Side; and
WHEREAS, Grand Street Settlement continues to grow into its next
century, building on its century-old tradition of outstanding supportive
services into the 21st Century and beyond; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Grand Street
Settlement on its centennial; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges this exceptional organization and its valuable contributions to
the community, fully confident that it will continue to enjoy the
successes it has experienced thus far; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Grand Street Settlement on
Manhattan's Lower East Side; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Grand Street Settlement.
