LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Bertram C. and Gloria Serling upon the
occasion of their designation as recipients of the 2016 Seneca Falls
Convention Days Community Service Award on July 15th, 2016
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and character
who have inspired and brought pride to our majestic Empire State with
their strong contributions to the community and model citizenship; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Bertram C. and Gloria Serling upon the occasion of their designation as
recipients of the 2016 Seneca Falls Convention Days Community Service
Award, to be presented on Friday, July 15th at a reception in Seneca
Falls, New York; and
WHEREAS, Married in 1956, Bertram C. and Gloria Serling have been
actively involved in their community and have been generous supporters
of the National Women's Hall of Fame and the Seneca Falls Historical
Society for numerous years; and
WHEREAS, Born in Seneca Falls, Bertram C. Serling graduated from
Mynderse Academy where he was a member of the undefeated, untied and
un-scored upon football team of 1946; after graduation, he attended
Alfred University, and received his Doctor of Law degree in 1954 from
the University of Buffalo Law School; and
WHEREAS, After obtaining his degrees, Bertram C. Serling proudly
served his country as a member of the United States Army in Germany
until 1956; and
WHEREAS, After being admitted to the New York State Bar, Bertram C.
Serling began a practice with his father, Philip under the firm name of
Serling and Serling; in 1961, he was admitted to the United States
Supreme Court; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his illustrious law career, Bertram C. Serling has
been a vital member of many professional organizations such as the Amer-
ican Bar Association, New York Bar Association and the Seneca County Bar
Association, where he served as President; and
WHEREAS, In January of 2016, Serling & Serling merged with Midey,
Mirras and Ricci, LLP, where he holds the title of Senior Counsel; as
the Senior Practicing Attorney in Seneca County, he has served as Attor-
ney for former Village of Seneca Falls, Seneca Falls Central School
District, Seneca Falls Machine Company and Goulds Pumps, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, Devoted to his community, Bertram C. Serling has been a
member of Seneca Falls Rotary Club since 1956, having served as the
youngest President at age 29; in 1970, he was instrumental in bringing
in women to Rotary in Seneca Falls; today, he still volunteers at all
the functions and special events and holds three Paul Harris Fellows;
and
WHEREAS, In addition, Bertram C. Serling has served as president of
various organizations including the Seneca Falls Country Club and the
Thunderbird Ski Club; he also served on the Boards of Directors for the
Geneva General Hospital, the Johnson Home, Chase Lincoln Bank, Eisenhow-
er College, the American Legion, the Jewish War Veterans and the VFW, as
well as the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce from which he received the
2012 Lifetime Achievement Award; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man was instrumental in land acquisition for
the New York Chiropractic College and was responsible for getting the
land and building donated for the Seneca Falls Recreational Center; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in New York City, Gloria Serling and her
family moved to Canandaigua, New York, while she was a student in high
school; she earned her bachelor's degree from Syracuse University in
1955; and
WHEREAS, For numerous years, Gloria Serling was a teacher at the
elementary schools in both Seneca Falls and Waterloo, New York; and
WHEREAS, An integral part of her community, Gloria Serling served as
President of the Women's League and the Taylor Brown Auxiliary, where
she managed the gift shop; and
WHEREAS, Appreciative of the arts, Gloria Serling appeared in several
Seneca Community Players' productions and as a sports enthusiast, she
was an active member and served on the Board of Directors of the Seneca
Falls Country Club where she enjoyed playing golf and organized women's
tournaments; and
WHEREAS, With them throughout have been their three beloved children,
Mark, Steven and Sharon, and their six treasured grandchildren, Andrew,
Samantha, Maxwell, Jordan, Emily and Nathan, all of whom feel privileged
to be a part of their life and rejoice in their accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Bertram C. and Gloria Serling upon the occasion of receiving the
2016 Seneca Falls Convention Days Community Service Award, and to wish
them continued success in all of their future endeavors; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Bertram C. and Gloria Serling.
