LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Stanley Brooks Burdick,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Stanley Brooks Burdick of Ticonderoga, New York, died on
Friday, April 22, 2016, at the age of 90; and
WHEREAS, Born on March 2, 1926, in Westerly, Rhode Island, to Reverend
Paul S. Burdick and Hancy Brooks Burdick, Stanley Brooks Burdick, affec-
tionately known as Stan, grew up in several towns in Rhode Island and
New York, as his father served churches in the area; and
WHEREAS, Stan Burdick distinguished himself in his profession and by
his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, Upon his graduation from Salem College in West Virginia, Stan
Burdick began a 17-year career with the YMCA that took him from Cran-
ston, Rhode Island to Middletown, Connecticut and on to Hamilton and
then Sandusky, Ohio; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, this affiliation with the YMCA also led Stan
Burdick to the Silver Bay Association where he called square dances for
more than 50 years; and
WHEREAS, Stan Burdick and his wife Cathie were married in 1955, at the
Silver Bay Chapel; in 1968, he left the YMCA and the couple purchased
AMERICAN SQUAREDANCE magazine, which they published and edited for 23
years; and
WHEREAS, In the heyday of club square dancing, Stan Burdick was an
accomplished "traveling" caller; he called in every state in America,
all of the Canadian provinces, and 20 countries abroad; he and his wife
led square dance tour groups around the world, including China and Afri-
ca, which they were able to promote in their magazine; and
WHEREAS, Stan Burdick's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, After the Burdick's sold the magazine in 1991, they retired
to their cottage at Silver Bay; Stan continued his lifelong hobby of
cartooning, drawing editorial cartoons for stints at THE POST-STAR in
Glens Falls, THE PRESS REPUBLICAN in Plattsburgh, and THE TIME OF TI in
Ticonderoga; and
WHEREAS, Stan Burdick also traveled to clubs and nursing homes and
presented programs of recitations and rhymes, accompanied by cartoon;
and
WHEREAS, In addition, this esteemed man started a cartoon museum in
Hague, later moving it to Ticonderoga, before donating the collection to
the Pittsburgh Toonseum in 2009; he also taught area children to draw in
various area venues; and
WHEREAS, Active within the community, Stan Burdick was one of the
three founders of the Northern Lake George Rotary, the organizer of the
Ticonderoga Stamp Club, and he brought a chapter of Torch International
to the area; and
WHEREAS, Stan Burdick is survived by his wife of 60 years, Cathie; two
sons, Bruce and Paul; a daughter Susan (Jamie); two brothers, Robert and
Roy; and a sister, Marion; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Stan Burdick leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Stanley Brooks Burdick, distinguished citizen and
devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Stanley Brooks Burdick.
