LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Lindsay May upon the occasion of
winning her third straight New York State Public High School Athletic
Association (NYSPHSAA) Girls Golf Championship
WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be achieved
only through strenuous practice, teamwork, and a dedicated coaching
staff; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize those
young people within the State of New York who, by achieving outstanding
success in athletic competition, have inspired and brought great pride
to their school and community; and
WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical develop-
ment of the young people of this State, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, imparting a desire for success, and developing a sense
of fair play and competition; and
WHEREAS, Lindsay May, a sophomore who attends Auburn High School, won
the 2016 New York State Public High School Athletic Association's
(NYSPHSAA) Girls Golf Championship on June 5, 2016, at Beth Page State
Park in Farmingdale, New York; and
WHEREAS, The 2016 New York State Girls Golf Championship win marked
Lindsay May's third consecutive state title; and
WHEREAS, Lindsay May began her first round of the tournament with a
pair of bogeys, before elevating her game with a series of four birdies;
by the 8th hole, she was in the lead; and
WHEREAS, On the back nine, Lindsay May parred the first 6 holes, and
although a bogey on the 16th hole cut her lead to two strokes, she
finished strong with a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole, and
defeated her competitors by four strokes; and
WHEREAS, Lindsay May earned a two-day total of 4-under 140, winning
first place and setting a new record for the lowest score in the state
tournament; and
WHEREAS, Lindsay May's record winning streak began back in 2014, when
she was just in eighth grade; she won her first state title at The
College Golf Course at Delhi, of the State University of New York at
Delhi, by setting a Section III record of 3-under par 69 in the first
round, and closing the championship tournament with a two-day total of
146; and
WHEREAS, Then in 2015, as a high school freshman, Lindsay May won her
second state title at The College Golf Course at Delhi by shooting a
course record score of 4-under par 68 on the first day, and finishing
the championship tournament with a score of 143; and
WHEREAS, Having secured a third victory on June 5, 2016, Lindsay May
became the first female golfer in the New York State Public High School
Athletic Association's (NYSPHSAA) history to win three straight titles
since the inception of the tournament in 2006; and
WHEREAS, Athletically and academically, Lindsay May has proven to be
an unbeatable combination of talents, reflecting favorably on her fami-
ly, her school and the Auburn community; and
WHEREAS, The athletic talent displayed by Lindsay May is due in great
part to the efforts of Coach Sarah Sturm; this skilled instructor has
helped develop potential into excellence; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the Auburn Varsity Girls golf season, Lindsay May
was always loyally and enthusiastically supported by her family, friends
and fans from throughout the entire community; and
WHEREAS, Lindsay May has demonstrated outstanding athletic ability and
good sportsmanship, proving that as a golfer she is second to none; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Lindsay May upon the occasion of her third straight New
York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Girls Golf
Championship; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Lindsay May and Coach Sarah Sturm.
