LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Michael Augugliaro upon the occasion of
his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor
bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Michael Augug-
liaro upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of a Liberty
Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York
State Senate; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, For 24 years, Michael Augugliaro worked for the New York City
Department of Sanitation, where he proudly helped make the City streets
passable for cars during winter storms; and
WHEREAS, In 1977, Michael Augugliaro and his family moved to Belle-
rose, New York, and shortly thereafter, he became involved with the
Queens Colony Civic Association, serving on the Executive Board for
approximately 25 years; and
WHEREAS, Along with his wife, Michael Augugliaro was instrumental in
having his Bellerose neighborhood rezoned to a one-family only zone, and
he helped organize National Night Out; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure, Michael Augugliaro diligently worked
to better the quality of life within the community Bellerose and other
areas of Queens; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, Michael Augugliaro has been a vital
member of the Joint Bellerose Business Development Corporation, which
strives to improve the business district by promoting the businesses and
improving the look of the strip; and
WHEREAS, Michael Augugliaro removed signs which cluttered the neigh-
borhood and graffiti from store fronts, as well as relocated 17 trees
that the New York State DOT had removed from the center median during
road construction; and
WHEREAS, Always willing to help someone, Michael Augugliaro honored a
fallen police officer by tying blue ribbons around the lamp posts on
Jericho Turnpike; on the day of his funeral, he helped organize the
reception that followed; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Angela, and his three
daughters, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and
rejoice in his accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, Individuals such as Michael Augugliaro, devoted to improving
the quality of life for others, enabling them to build lives of dignity
and self-worth, are deserving of the highest praise and recognition;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Michael Augugliaro upon the occasion of his designation as recipi-
ent of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by
the New York State Senate; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Michael Augugliaro.
