LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Donald Smith upon the occasion of
celebrating his 100th Birthday

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commemorate and
recognize certain milestones celebrated by citizens of this great Nation
and Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Donald Smith upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th Birthday;
and
WHEREAS, Donald Smith was born on February 28, 1915, in Dunkirk, New
York, to Laurence and Adeline Smith; and
WHEREAS, From 1933 to 1935, he served as a medic with the Civilian
Conservation Corps (CCC) at Letchworth State Park in Genesee Falls, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Don and his wife, Patricia, were married in June of 1957; the
couple took up residence on Spruce Street in Jamestown and later moved
to Driftwood Road; Don and Patricia most recently resided on Dutch
Hollow Road in Greenhurst, New York; and
WHEREAS, Among his greatest joy during the last 100 years was raising
his family; he takes pride in his family and the values he strove to
instill in them over the years; and
WHEREAS, He is the father of five children, Donald Jr., Laureen, Timo-
thy, Michael and Kathleen; he has been further blessed with eight grand-
children, Nick, Lynnsey, Vanessa, Ryan, Michael, Christopher, Benjamin
and Samuel; and one great-grandson, Locke; and
WHEREAS, For more than 20 years, Don Smith owned and operated D & S
Glass in Jamestown, New York; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Don Smith has been involved with numer-
ous civic organizations, including Elks Lodge No. 263 in Jamestown,
where he was named an Honorary Past Exalted Ruler for his more than 50
years of service; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Don Smith partnered with John Alm to found the
Chautauqua County Hockey Association in 1975; he also served as Vice
President of Administration for Jamestown's first two Babe Ruth World
Series in 1980 and 1981; and
WHEREAS, For many years, Don Smith assisted the Salvation Army as a
bell ringer, and was an active volunteer for the United Way and the
Physical Therapy Department at WCA Hospital in Jamestown; and
WHEREAS, This beloved man has enriched the lives of those around him
through his smile and jubilance, and through the charm and wisdom which
comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize and honor the lives of beloved citizens who have reached a remark-
able age and who have witnessed and celebrated the innovations, cultural
developments, and awesome achievements of this country during the last
century; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Donald Smith upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th
Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Donald Smith.
