LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Clifford M. Barber, retired
Lieutenant Colonel, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his
community

WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in this Nation, and the great
State of New York, is reflective of the purposeful lives and good works
of those patriotic and civic-minded community members who dedicate their
lives and careers to the service of others; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to publicly mourn the death of
those prominent citizens whose lifework and purposeful endeavors have
served to enrich and enhance the quality and character of life for
others in their community and the great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Retired Lieutenant Colonel Clifford M. Barber of Walden, New
York died on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at the age of 97; and
WHEREAS, Clifford M. Barber was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to the
late Clifford Miner and Ruth Ferris Barber; and
WHEREAS, In 1940, Clifford M. Barber graduated from Rutgers University
before attending Cornell Law School; he was admitted to the New York
State Bar in 1948, and in 1960, to the Federal Bar, Southern District of
New York; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his illustrious law career which spanned five
decades, Clifford M. Barber, Esq. successfully served his community of
Montgomery, New York; and
WHEREAS, Clifford M. Barber proudly served his country as a member of
the United States Army, commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry in
1940; he volunteered for Active Duty in 1941, and was released on Febru-
ary 23, 1946; this esteemed soldier remained in Inactive Reserve until
1967, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel; and
WHEREAS, Clifford M. Barber distinguished himself in his profession
and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the
welfare of his community; and
WHEREAS, Clifford M. Barber's commitment to excellence, and his spirit
of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including char-
itable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, An active member of his community, Clifford M. Barber served
from 1941-1950 as Village of Walden Trustee; in 1955, he was elected
Town Justice of the Town of Montgomery, New York, and was re-elected for
four terms; and
WHEREAS, Clifford M. Barber was a former President of Orange Hose No.
1, and a former Trustee at the Josephine Public Library; he was also a
former Chairman of the Red Cross Blood Drive, President of the Walden
Rotary International, and Director of Highland National Bank, Newburgh,
New York; and
WHEREAS, Clifford M. Barber is most recognized for receiving the last
Presidential appointment to serve as Superintendent of the United States
Assay Office in New York City; for nine years, he was responsible for
moving the gold bullion from the United States Assay Office in New York
City to West Point, New York, creating the Mint; in 1984, he cast the
first Olympic Gold Coin; and
WHEREAS, After leaving West Point, Clifford M. Barber accepted an
appointment to work on the Industrial Board of Appeals in Albany, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Clifford M. Barber's commitment to excellence, and his spirit
of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including char-
itable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his first wife, Lucie Barber Peatling, his
second wife, Lelia Goff Barber, and his sister, Emily Jean, Clifford M.

Barber is survived by his loving wife, Jane Mount Barber; four sons,
Thomas (Marcia), William (Lisa), Clifford (Emily), and James (Wanda);
five daughters, Marny (Mike), Jean (Ed), Anne (Paul), Cathy (Paul), and
Carole (John); two step-sons, Carl and Scott; and was the loving grand-
father of 16 grandchildren, Edward, Jennifer, Lyn, John, Kaitlyn, Joan-
na, Corey, Mattie, William, Robert, Ian, Trevor, Lucas, Devin, Scott,
and Steven; as well as five great grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, retired Lieutenant Colonel Clifford M. Barber leaves behind
a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will remain as a
comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Clifford M. Barber, retired Lieutenant Colonel,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Clifford M. Barber.
