LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Norma Holmberg upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award by In Our
Own Voices, Inc. on July 17, 2016
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Norma Holmberg upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the
Volunteer of the Year Award by In Our Own Voices, Inc., to be celebrated
at its Annual Jazz in July Event on Sunday, July 17, 2016, at the State
Room, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, In Our Own Voices is an autonomous organization dedicated to
addressing the many needs and ensuring the physical, mental, spiritual,
political, cultural, and economic survival and growth of the Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People of Color (LGBT POC) community in
the Capital Region of Upstate New York; and
WHEREAS, Norma Holmberg has been called upon to contribute her time
and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always
given of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, A native of the Bronx, Norma Holmberg relocated to Albany,
New York, to work in a children's agency, where she began to lead and
organize after-school programs; and
WHEREAS, Norma Holmberg then joined the volunteering program Ameri-
Corp, where she worked for two years in the Albany City School District;
during the summers, she served at worthy agencies such as The Boys &
Girls Club; and
WHEREAS, Assisting in the schools inspired Norma Holmberg to become a
Teacher's Assistant; currently, she is working in the Dual Language
Program for the Albany City School District, which has provided her with
many other opportunities to volunteer not only in the school but also in
the Latino community; and
WHEREAS, Through her place of work, Norma Holmberg has become involved
with the Ronald McDonald House and the March of Dimes; for the last 10
years, she has been volunteering at various LGBT Pride Day Events; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Norma Holmberg has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, After moving to Albany 26 years ago, Norma Holmberg has
proudly accomplished many personal goals for herself and her community;
and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband of 29 years, and
her three children, all of whom who feel privileged to be a part of her
life and rejoice in her accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, Our society is greatly benefited by the purposeful efforts of
individuals who unite for the cause of improving the quality of life for
others, and who proactively work toward the goal of dignity for all;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Norma Holmberg upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the Volunteer of the Year Award by In Our Own Voices, Inc. on July
17, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Norma Holmberg.
