LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of J. Leo Glynn, retired Petty
Officer First Class, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his
community

WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in this Nation, and the great
State of New York, is reflective of the purposeful lives and good works
of those patriotic and civic-minded community members who dedicate their
lives and careers to the service of others; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to publicly mourn the death of
those prominent citizens whose lifework and purposeful endeavors have
served to enrich and enhance the quality and character of life for
others in their community and the great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Retired Petty Officer First Class J. Leo Glynn died on Tues-
day, February 3, 2015, at the age of 89; and
WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Newburgh, New York, J. Leo Glynn was
born on March 22, 1925, to the late J. Leo and Mary (Mae Brady) Glynn;
and
WHEREAS, J. Leo Glynn proudly served his country as a member of the
United States Navy from 1943-1946, at Naval Supply Depots in Africa and
Pennsylvania; after his honorable discharge, he married his wife, Gene-
vieve DeVito, on December 1, 1946, at St. Mary's Church in Newburgh; and
WHEREAS, J. Leo Glynn earned a Bachelor of Business Administration
degree from the University of Miami and was named to the Alpha Kappa Psi
International Professional Business Fraternity; upon graduation, he
began his employment with Central Hudson, and would continue for 33
years of distinguished service; and
WHEREAS, J. Leo Glynn distinguished himself by his sincere dedication
and substantial contribution to the welfare of his community; and
WHEREAS, His commitment to excellence, and his spirit of humanity,
carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charitable and
civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, An active member of the community of Newburgh, J. Leo Glynn
served as a Town Councilman and as a member of its Planning Board; he
was both a member and President of the Kiwanis Club of Newburgh, and a
volunteer with the Meals on Wheels; and
WHEREAS, A 50 year LIFE member of the Town of Newburgh American Legion
Post 1420, J. Leo Glynn held command positions at the Post, County, and
Department levels; he was also a Past Chef de Gare (Cdr) of the Orange
County 40 & 8 Society; and
WHEREAS, For over 40 years, J. Leo Glynn served as the American
Legion's Boys' State Chairman and also Judge Advocate; he personally
taught more than 500 young men the importance of civic responsibility
and personal accountability; and
WHEREAS, In addition, J. Leo Glynn was a member of the first class
named to the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame, and served as
a member of the Orange County Legislature Advisory Committee, as well as
the National Veterans Advisory Committee; and
WHEREAS, For J. Leo Glynn's outstanding contributions to society, the
American Legion bestowed upon him the Citation of Honor, the National
Achievement Award, and the Americanism citation; he also was selected as
the 1998 Orange County Legionnaire of the Year, as well as the Grand
Marshal of the Town of Newburgh's Memorial Day Parade; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his two brothers, W. Joseph and Donald Gerard
Glynn, J. Leo Glynn is survived by his loving wife, Genevieve; one son,
James (Jerilyn) Glynn; one daughter, Kathleen (Alan) Guarino; four
grandchildren, Margaret (James) Hosking, Laura (Brad) Smith, Allegra
Guarino, and Christofer Guarino and friend Jenna; one step-granddaughter

Rachel (Jason); four great-grandsons, Grant, Drew, J.B., and Avery; one
brother, John (Carol); and four sisters-in-law, Eleanor, Mildred
(Jeffrey), Gloria, and Elizabeth; as well as many nieces and nephews;
and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, J. Leo Glynn leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of J. Leo Glynn, retired Petty Officer First Class,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of J. Leo Glynn.
