LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Thomas J. Super posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest
honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Thomas J.
Super posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate, to be celebrated at the Columbia County Honor A
Deceased Veteran Ceremony on Monday, October 24, 2016; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Thomas J. Super was born to Michael and Nellie Super on
September 13, 1923, in Hudson, New York; he attended Hudson Central
School and worked as a riveter's helper in Schenectady; and
WHEREAS, Drafted into the United States Army on February 12, 1943, at
Camp Upton, Thomas J. Super received additional training as a cannoneer;
as number one gunner, he was assigned to the 155mm howitzer gun crew and
was responsible for elevating the gun and attaching the firing pin; and
WHEREAS, On June 10, 1943, Private Thomas J. Super was assigned to the
Mediterranean Theater of Operations with the 36th Field Artillery
Battalion; he valiantly served campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, Italy,
France, Germany and Austria; and
WHEREAS, In addition, this brave soldier was involved in the battles
of Central Europe, Naples, Foggia, Rhineland, Rome, Arno, Sicily and
Southern France; and
WHEREAS, After two years and four months Private Thomas J. Super
returned to the United States and was honorably discharged on October
13, 1945 at Fort Dix; and
WHEREAS, For his meritorious service to his country Private Thomas J.
Super was awarded The European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with
a bronze arrowhead and six battle stars, as well as the Good Conduct
Medal; and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his military service, Thomas J. Super
married Reubina Quick at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson, New
York, and together they raised two sons; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to his community, Thomas J. Super was a member
of the VFW, American Legion, Washington Hose, Hudson Fish and Game, and
was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church; he worked as a truck
driver and auto mechanic, retiring after 20 years with Schermann Truck-
ing; and
WHEREAS, Thomas J. Super passed away on June 17, 1994; he was 70 years
old; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his wife, Reubina, Thomas J. Super is survived
by his two sons, Michael and Stephen, as well as two grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Thomas J. Super demonstrated his love for his country and merits forev-
ermore the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for
their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Thomas J. Super posthumously upon the occasion of his designation
as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Thomas J. Super.
