LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Alexander G. Murphy posthumously upon
the occasion of his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the
highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Alexander G.
Murphy posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate, to be celebrated at the Rensselaer County Honor-
A-Deceased Veteran Ceremony on Monday, December 12, 2016; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Born on July 17, 1918, to the late Edward J. Murphy and Ruth
E. Cadmus Murphy, Alexander G. Murphy was a lifelong resident of Troy,
New York; he graduated from Troy High School in 1936, and went on to
earn a degree from Hudson Valley Community College; and
WHEREAS, A veteran of the United States Army and Army Air Force during
World War II, Alexander G. Murphy proudly served with the 775th Squadron
463rd Group 5th Bombardment Wing - 15th USAAF at Celone Army Air Base
near Foggia, Italy; a bombardier navigator, his plane was the lead crew,
flying in nearly 30 missions; and
WHEREAS, Achieving the rank of First Sergeant, Alexander G. Murphy
earned the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Honorable Service
Lapel Button WWII, the EAME Theater Ribbon with three Battle Stars, and
the World War II Victory Medal for his exceptional service; and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his military service, Alexander G.
Murphy and his brother became co-owners of Murphy's Oil and Hardware and
Edoral Reality; he was also the builder and owner of the Tamarac Plaza,
Inc.; and
WHEREAS, Active within his community, Alexander G. Murphy served as a
Brunswick Town Councilman and was instrumental in the founding of the
Brunswick VFW Post No. 831; he was also a member of the Brunswick Lodge
of Elks, the Kiwanis Club, Eagle Mills Fire Department, Brittonkill
Board of Education, and former President of the Brunswick Republican
Club; and
WHEREAS, Alexander G. Murphy was an avid outdoorsman, spending at
least one month a year camping in the Thousand Islands; in the late
1960s he took his love of the water, boating and fishing to his camp at
Saratoga Lake where he spent as much time as possible in the summer; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Alexander G. Murphy enjoyed playing golf, horse
racing, the Racino, and taking bus trips to Turning Stone and Mohegan
Sun; and
WHEREAS, Alexander G. Murphy died Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at the age
of 97; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his first wife, Elsie; his second wife, Rose-
mary "Midge"; a son, Alexander Jr.; two brothers, Edward and Joseph; and
a niece, Paulette; Alexander G. Murphy is survived by two daughters,
Holly and Alexis; step-children, Gail, Rosemary (Peter), Kathy (Philip),

Holly (Timothy) and Nancy (Ian); step-grandchildren, Jennifer, Eric
(Dana), Matthew (Lisa), Joseph, Leah, Pamela (Christopher), Meredith
(Paul), Melissa, Maureen (Matthew), Timothy (Erin), Kathleen (Joseph),
Patrick (Frances), Meagan (Nicholas) and Adam; 14 step-great-grandchil-
dren; a niece, Beverly; and three nephews, Joseph Jr. (Deborah), Edward
III and Edward Jr. (Barbara); and
WHEREAS, Individuals such as Alexander G. Murphy devoted to improving
the quality of life for others, enabling them to build lives of dignity
and self-worth are deserving of the highest praise and recognition; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Alexander G. Murphy posthumously upon the occasion of his desig-
nation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon
an individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Alexander G. Murphy.
