LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Doris Noonan posthumously upon the
occasion of her designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest
honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace-
time, deserve a special salute; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Doris Noonan
posthumously upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New
York State Senate, to be celebrated on Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at
Saratoga County's Honor Our Deceased Veteran Program; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Born on April 3, 1921, in Mechanicville, New York, Doris
Noonan graduated from Saratoga High School in 1939; continuing her
education, she went on to graduate as a Registered Nurse in 1942 from
Charles S. Wilson Memorial Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Doris Noonan entered into military service on April 1, 1943;
she served her country as a member of the United States Army Nurse
Corps, serving in Corsica, Sardinia, Italy, and Southern France; at the
end of WWII she was assigned to the 170th Evac Hospital in Manila,
Philippines; and
WHEREAS, Doris Noonan served as Charge Nurse for medical and surgical
procedures as well as in research wards; in this capacity, she was
responsible for personnel and general nursing procedures; in addition,
she was part of the emergency surgery duty at the front lines in Po
Valley Campaign; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of her valiant service, Doris Noonan was the
recipient of numerous awards including the American Theater Ribbon,
Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, European Theater Ribbon and the WWII
Victory Medal; and
WHEREAS, After being honorably discharged on April 8, 1946, with the
esteemed rank of 1st Lieutenant, Doris Noonan worked for 20 years as an
OB/GYN nurse, teaching and mentoring many nurses at the Mary McClellan
School of Nursing in Cambridge, New York, as well as the former Leonard
Hospital in Troy, New York, until retiring in 1977; and
WHEREAS, A faithful member of St. Peters' Roman Catholic Church in
Stillwater, New York, Doris Noonan served as a Eucharistic minister and
belonged to the Rosary Society; she died on December 4, 2006, at the age
of 85; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited her patriotism both at home and abroad,
Doris Noonan demonstrated her love for her country and merits forever-
more, the highest respect of her State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for
their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Doris Noonan posthumously upon the occasion of her designation

as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Doris Noonan.
