LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Monica Lee upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2014 Neuroscience Research Prize by the
American Academy of Neurology

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the youth
of today, and leaders of tomorrow, whose character and achievements best
exemplify the ideals and values cherished by this great State and
Nation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Monica Lee upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the 2014
Neuroscience Research Prize by the American Academy of Neurology; and
WHEREAS, The Neuroscience Research Prize is an award sponsored by the
American Academy of Neurology in order to encourage and reward high
school students who explore the world of the brain and nervous system
through laboratory research; and
WHEREAS, Monica Lee, a senior at Herricks High School, has been
selected as one of four national recipients for this prestigious honor;
and
WHEREAS, A four-year participant in the Herricks High School Science
Research Program, this esteemed young scholar has conducted independent
research over the past two years at the New York University-Alexandria
Center for Life Sciences at East River Science Park; and
WHEREAS, Monica Lee's research, entitled "Modulating the Innate Immune
System through the Stimulation of Toll-Like Receptor 9 as a Therapy for
Alzheimer's Disease in a TG-SwDI Mouse Model in Both Acute and Long Term
Studies," was developed under the able mentorship of science research
teacher, Renee Barcia; and
WHEREAS, In April of 2015, Monica Lee will present her work at the
American Academy of Neurology's Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., the
world's largest gathering of neurologists; and
WHEREAS, Educational competitions which serve to better prepare our
students for their future participation in the marketplace of ideas are
worthy of praise and support; and
WHEREAS, Poised eagerly with enthusiasm and determined purpose, Monica
Lee now stands honorably, with just pride in her accomplishments and in
eager anticipation of future challenges, understanding and appreciating
the caring counsel and support provided by her teachers and parents;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Monica Lee upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the 2014 Neuroscience Research Prize by the American Academy of Neurolo-
gy; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Monica Lee.
