LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Tom Raleigh upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2014 Timothy J. Coughlin '76 Memorial
Award for Outstanding Contributions to St. Mary's High School
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor those indi-
viduals of outstanding character within the State of New York who are
dedicated to developing character and sportsmanship in our young people;
and
WHEREAS, It is also the practice of this Legislative Body that indi-
viduals who distinguish themselves in service to their faith and commu-
nity merit the highest commendation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Tom
Raleigh upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the 2014
Timothy J. Coughlin '76 Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to
St. Mary's High School; and
WHEREAS, This momentous occasion, hosted by St. Mary's High School,
was celebrated during the 22nd Annual Don Monti Memorial Golf Classic,
on Thursday, September 25, 2014, at Plandome Country Club, Plandome, New
York; and
WHEREAS, The Coughlin Family of Manhasset established the Timothy J.
Coughlin '76 Memorial Award in 2003; the award is presented annually in
memory of Timothy Coughlin, known for his perseverance and commitment to
family, to bestow honor on a person who exemplifies the true spirit of
Christianity through dedication to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, and
service to others; and
WHEREAS, A Floral Park, New York resident, Tom Raleigh joined the
Nassau County Police Department in 1969; four years later, he was
assigned to the rewarding job of overseeing the Manhasset Police Boys
Club; and
WHEREAS, For the next 17 years, Torn Raleigh oversaw almost all the
athletic activity in the Manhasset community, which often coincided with
initiatives at both Manhasset High School and St. Mary's Parish; and
WHEREAS, Tom Raleigh coached Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity
Boys Basketball at St. Mary's High School from 1982-1990; during his
tenure as Coach, they won five championships; and
WHEREAS, Tom Raleigh also coached Boys Lacrosse at Manhasset High
School and was a co-founder of the Manhasset Lacrosse Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Tom Raleigh served as a member of St. Mary's
Parish Council, and helped found the Manhasset Youth Council; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his loving wife, Marilyn, his
five devoted children, Tom Jr., Brian, Katie, Kevin, and Kristie Erin,
and his 12 adoring grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a
part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his career thus far, Tom Raleigh has brought an
uncompromising standard of excellence to his work and a warm sense of
caring and concern to every young person he coaches; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Tom Raleigh upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the 2014 Timothy J. Coughlin '76 Memorial Award for Outstanding Contrib-
utions to St. Mary's High School; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Tom Raleigh.
