LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Lieutenant Luis Alvarez upon the occa-
sion of his retirement after more than 30 years of dedicated service to
the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished officers and citizens who would devote them-
selves to public service, demonstrating great courage and diligence in
providing for the care and welfare of the citizens of their communities
and this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
command the respect and admiration of their community for their exem-
plary contributions and service on behalf of others; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Lieutenant
Luis Alvarez upon the occasion of his retirement after more than 30
years of dedicated service to the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office; and
WHEREAS, Luis Alvarez began his illustrious career in law enforcement
with the Liberty Police Department in 1983; two years later, he was
hired by the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office and rose through the ranks
to the esteemed rank of lieutenant; and
WHEREAS, For the past 18 years, Lieutenant Luis Alvarez has been heav-
ily involved in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program,
educating students and the overall community about the dangers of
substance abuse; and
WHEREAS, A familiar presence throughout the county, and one of the
area's most recognizable law enforcement officers, Lieutenant Luis Alva-
rez has tirelessly served his community through his work with the DARE
and School Resource Officer programs; in addition he has helped set up
Neighborhood Watch communities, and given talks to seniors and other
groups on home safety and avoiding scams; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards and commendations for his
outstanding service, Lieutenant Luis Alvarez was honored with the Fire-
men's Life Saving Award and the Sullivan County Shield's Life Saving
Award for his heroic actions in rescuing a man who was drowning in the
Delaware River; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Lieutenant Luis Alvarez has
displayed throughout his career; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife of 38 years, Ida;
their two children, Julio and Lucy; and four grandchildren, Stevie,
Luis, Alex, and Charlie, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his
life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those dedicated
public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to the preservation
of order and the protection of others are worthy and due full praise for
their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Lieutenant Luis Alvarez upon the occasion of his retirement after
more than 30 years of dedicated service to the Sullivan County Sheriff's
Office; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to honor Lieutenant Luis Alvarez.
