LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Magdelene Williams upon the occa-
sion of celebrating her 102nd Birthday
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Magdelene Williams upon the occasion of her 102nd Birthday to be
celebrated with a party held in her honor on Tuesday, March 24, 2015,
during the morning worship service at Bushwick Parish United Methodist
Church, followed by an afternoon Luncheon; and
WHEREAS, The second youngest of nine children, Magdelene Williams was
born in Red Springs, North Carolina, on March 24, 1913; she moved to
Brooklyn, New York during the Great Depression in the late 1930s; she
found work as a housekeeper and continued to work very hard for the same
family until she was in her 90s; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with her zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Magdelene Williams married Howard Williams who died while her
children were still young; she has been a widow for more than 65 years;
and
WHEREAS, Magdelene Williams worked hard to raise her five children as
a single parent; today, she is the proud grandmother of nine grandchil-
dren and five great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Since 1960, Magdelene Williams has been a faithful member of
Bushwick Parish United Methodist Church; she served as a Sunday school
teacher and gave instruction in needlepoint, crocheting, and quilting;
and
WHEREAS, Magdelene Williams continues to do quilting, and enjoys daily
walks around the neighborhood, and to church every Sunday; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished woman, who has experienced the incredible
joys and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the
stamina and courage to savor a full life, has inspired the lives of her
many friends and family; and
WHEREAS, Magdelene Williams has enriched the lives of those around her
through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Magdelene Williams upon the occasion of celebrating her
102nd Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Magdelene Williams.
