LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 175th Anniversary of the Town
of Croghan, New York

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the proud and distinguished histories of the people and communi-
ties which comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 175th Anniversary of the Town of Croghan, New York, to be
celebrated on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at the Croghan Town Barn in Beaver
Falls, New York; and
WHEREAS, Originally settled in the 1830s, the Town of Croghan, New
York is named after Colonel George Croghan, a famous war hero who served
with distinction at the battle of Tippecanoe and the sieges at Fort
Meigs and Stephenson during the War of 1812; and
WHEREAS, On April 5, 1841, the Town of Croghan was officially formed
out of the communities of Watson and Diana; and
WHEREAS, In its early years, the Town of Croghan's rich, fertile soil,
and abundant natural resources attracted immigrants from France, Germa-
ny, and Switzerland; the earliest communities were in Belfort and the
French Settlement, which later became known as the Village of Croghan
and was incorporated in 1906; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its history, Croghan has been a center of industry
and commerce; over the course of its evolution, it has hosted numerous
business enterprises including tanneries, blacksmith shops, cheese
factories, gristmills, sawmills, and paper mills; and
WHEREAS, Today, this esteemed upstate community is supported by agri-
culture, logging and power production, and contains many small busi-
nesses; including the famous Croghan Meat Market, which was formed in
1888; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, Croghan is home to the American Maple Museum and
Hall of Fame, the Oswegatchie Educational Center, and the Railway
Historical Society of Northern New York Museum; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth
and change, the Town of Croghan continues its commitment to enhancing
the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive business,
institutional and educational climate, and providing all essential
services; and
WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of Supervisor Andrew A. Lehman, the
citizens of the Town of Croghan proudly celebrate this long and vibrant
history, and look forward to its future; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize and commemorate milestones in the history of communities, both
large and small, in this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 175th Anniversary of the Town of Croghan, New York; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Andrew A. Lehman, Town of Croghan Supervisor.
