LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Auburn
Rotary Club on April 12, 2015

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to organizations of high purpose and worthy accomplishment whose
endeavors have a significant impact on the lives of others and the
communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the Auburn Rotary Club on Sunday, April
12, 2015, at the Springside Inn in Auburn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Rotary International was founded in 1905 by Paul Harris and a
group of associates; today, it has 34,000 clubs in more than 160 coun-
tries and more than 1,200,000 members worldwide; and
WHEREAS, Rotary International is dedicated to the development of
fellowship and understanding among business and professional leaders,
the promotion of community-betterment endeavors and of high standards in
business and professional practices, and the advancement of interna-
tional understanding, goodwill and peace; and
WHEREAS, Under the exemplary leadership of the Auburn Rotary Club's
first President William J. Henry, the club sponsored sending 17,000
illustrated booklets to other surrounding cities which described its
culture, manufacturing climate, and housing architecture; and
WHEREAS, By October of 1915, the Auburn Rotary Club membership grew to
85 members; it was at that time the Club began sponsoring picnics for
children, and distributing food baskets during the holidays; and
WHEREAS, During the next few years, Auburn Rotarians were instrumental
in helping supply automobiles on Memorial Day to veterans of the Grand
Army, Spanish American War, and the Mexican border incident; in addi-
tion, the members aided in the purchase of a truck for Company A of the
National Guard, and assisted in a variety of civilian war efforts during
World War I; and
WHEREAS, In 1919, the Auburn Rotary Club voted unanimously to acquire
land for a camping site to be used by the Boy Scouts of America; one
year later, land on Owasco Lake was purchased and later deeded to the
Boy Scouts of America Council as the beginning of Camp Rotary which is
still used today; and
WHEREAS, In October of 1923, the Auburn Rotarians were honored for
their work with crippled children and subsequently, received the
esteemed Warren G. Harding Memorial Flag; and
WHEREAS, In 1945, the Auburn Rotary Club purchased and presented to
the first blood bank in the city to Auburn Memorial Hospital; over the
years, the members have contributed to both the Auburn Memorial Hospital
and the former Mercy Hospital, purchasing specialized equipment; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the community-minded Auburn Rotarians provided
Hoopes Park and Auburn with a fountain in 1966; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, the Auburn Rotary Club has supported numerous
agencies such as the Heart Fund, Cancer Fund, March of Dimes, Cerebral
Palsy Fund, Salvation Army, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, YMCA, E. John
Gavras Center, and Camp Columbus, just to name a few; and
WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of club President Debra English,
the Auburn Rotary Club remains true to the principles of Rotary, to the
worthy causes it supports, and to service to its community and its citi-
zens; and
WHEREAS, As the Auburn Rotary Club proudly celebrates 100 years of
"Service Above Self," it reaffirms its commitment to and support of
Rotary International's programs and fundamental beliefs; and

WHEREAS, On the auspicious occasion of its 100th Anniversary, this
Legislative Body is proud to have the opportunity to applaud the good
works and worthy endeavors of the Auburn Rotary Club and its members,
and to honor the Club for its unremitting dedication to service and its
distinguished record of accomplishment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Auburn Rotary Club on April 12,
2015, and to pay tribute to its past and present members; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Debra English, President, Auburn Rotary Club, Auburn, New
York.
