LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim April 30 through May 7, 2016, as Osteogenesis Imperfecta Aware-
ness Week in the State of New York

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official
weeks set aside to increase awareness of serious issues which affect the
lives of citizens of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to memorial-
ize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim April 30 through May 7, 2016,
as Osteogenesis Imperfecta Awareness Week in the State of New York, in
conjunction with the observance of National Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Awareness Week; and
WHEREAS, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), also known as brittle bone
disease, is a genetic disorder characterized by fragile bones that break
easily; a person born with this disorder is affected throughout his or
her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, There are different types of OI with a range of severity from
mild to life threatening; and
WHEREAS, Because there is no cure for OI, treatment focuses on mini-
mizing fractures, the surgical correction of deformity, reducing bone
fragility, and maximizing mobility and independent function; and
WHEREAS, Increased funding for education and research are needed to
help find more effective treatments; and
WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater public awareness of
rare disorders and diseases of unmet need, and more must be done to
increase activity at the local, state and national levels to support
those afflicted as well as their families and caregivers; now, there-
fore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim April 30 through May 7,
2016, as Osteogenesis Imperfecta Awareness Week in the State of New
York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
