LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Kevin P. Lynch upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Green Leadership Award by the Alley Pond
Environmental Center on June 20, 2016
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Kevin P. Lynch upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Green Leadership Award by the Alley Pond Environmental Center, to be
celebrated at its Green Gala, Celebrating 40 Years, on Monday, June 20,
2016, at Terrace on the Park, Flushing, New York; and
WHEREAS, Kevin P. Lynch served for more than three decades as the
director of organizing and political action for major unions in New York
and New Jersey; he organized 20,000 workers into the house of labor,
providing their families with the many benefits and protections of a
union contract; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his illustrious career Kevin P. Lynch has served
as the Director of Economic Development for the New York City Central
Labor Council, and as leader of a Newark-based local union; he also
helped the Consortium of Workers Education become the workforce develop-
ment arm of the CLC, a collaboration which provides job training and
upgrading courses, free of charge, to 85,000 workers; and
WHEREAS, For 35 years, Kevin P. Lynch has been known as a prominent
labor coordinator of national mobilizations; in the early 1980s, he
convened a meeting of progressive labor leaders who began organizing a
labor march on Washington, leading to the AFL-CIO call for Solidarity
Day when 250,000 union members marched in the nation's capital; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Kevin P. Lynch was one of the top leaders of the
United Nations Disarmament Rally when one million demonstrators filled
New York City's Central Park; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, Kevin P. Lynch was honored by the
Greek Olympic Committee at a UN ceremony for his efforts to end the
nuclear arms race; he also served for many years as the UN represen-
tative for foreign journalist unions; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of countless awards and accolades, Kevin P.
Lynch has received official commendations from the governments of Chile
and Guyana for his help in restoring democratic governments; and
WHEREAS, Kevin P. Lynch is a contributing author of A NEW LABOR MOVE-
MENT FOR THE NEW CENTURY, and his labor oriented television and radio
shows are part of New York University's Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives;
and
WHEREAS, As a citizen of both the United States and Ireland, Kevin P.
Lynch was a founder of the Irish Arts Center in Hell's Kitchen, and
chair of the Sean O'Casey Centennial at Town Hall; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Fordham University, Kevin P. Lynch studied in
Rome in a program and served as the United States Catholic Student
Representative to the Vatican; he served two years as a Peace Corps
volunteer working with a banned Bolivian Tin Miners Union in towns occu-
pied by army regiments; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Bernice, and their
children, Rebecca and Sara, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of
his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Kevin P. Lynch upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the Green Leadership Award by the Alley Pond Environmental Center on
June 20, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Kevin P. Lynch.
