LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Irene V. Scheid for her 25 years of
distinguished service as Executive Director of Alley Pond Environmental
Center, and this year's recipient of the Environmental Education Award

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Irene V.
Scheid for her 25 years of distinguished service as Executive Director
of Alley Pond Environmental Center, and this year's recipient of the
Environmental Education Award; this momentous occasion will be cele-
brated at its Green Gala, Celebrating 40 Years, on Monday, June 20,
2016, at Terrace on the Park, Flushing, New York; and
WHEREAS, Irene V. Scheid began her illustrious career at Alley Pond
Environmental Center (APEC) as a college intern in August of 1980; she
became a staff member in January of the following year, upon graduating
with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies from St. John's
University; and
WHEREAS, Through Alley Pond Environmental Center, Irene V. Scheid
participated in the Watson/Sierra Club Summer Ecology Workshops, week-
long workshops exploring the environment and natural history of various
sites in New Jersey and New York; and
WHEREAS, Beginning as an Administrative Assistant, Irene V. Scheid
climbed the ranks of APEC to become Office Manager, Assistant Executive
Director, and then Interim Executive Director; in 1991, she accepted the
task of Executive Director, the esteemed position from which she will
retire; and
WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of Irene V. Scheid, APEC's budget
has shown remarkable financial growth and the organization is anticipat-
ing their new Silver LEED environmental center within the next couple of
years; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Irene V. Scheid for her 25 years of distinguished service as Exec-
utive Director of Alley Pond Environmental Center, and this year's
recipient of the Environmental Education Award; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Irene V. Scheid.
