LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Gordon "Pete" Sears upon the occa-
sion of his induction into the New York State Hockey Hall of Fame
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those esteemed individuals who distinguish themselves through
exceptional performance, outstanding achievement, and peerless commit-
ment to excellence; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Gordon "Pete" Sears upon the occasion of his induction into the New
York State Hockey Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed man played a major role in the growth and
success of hockey in Oswego, New York; and
WHEREAS, Pete Sears grew up in Lake Placid and was influenced by the
Olympic history of the community and the youth sports that were provided
by the adults who took an interest in them; he participated in the Lake
Placid Pee Wee Hockey Association, Little League, Babe Ruth, American
Legion Baseball and Pop Warner Football; and
WHEREAS, After playing four years of high school football, hockey and
baseball, Pete Sears went on to attend Oswego State University where he
was a standout goaltender on the school's hockey team and earned a
degree in education; during this time he was also selected to the All-
American College Hockey Team; and
WHEREAS, Intertwined with his college years, Pete Sears valiantly
served as an Infantry Squad Leader in the United States Army during the
Vietnam War; and
WHEREAS, Pete Sears went on to be selected as a goaltender for the
1972 Olympic Hockey Team which went on to win a Silver Medal in Sapporo,
Japan; for the next three years he played professional hockey in Cleve-
land, St. Petersburg, and Columbus; and
WHEREAS, Returning to Oswego in 1975, Pete Sears taught history and
coached hockey in the City School District for the next 30 years, during
which time his teams won multiple league and sectional championships;
and
WHEREAS, In addition to the New York State High School Hockey Hall of
Fame, Pete Sears has also been inducted into the Oswego State University
Hall of Fame, the Oswego State University Athletic Hall of Fame, and the
Oswego City Fast-Pitch Softball Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Pete Sears was also awarded New York State's Peter Rush Award
for selfless, long-term dedication and commitment to the growth of youth
hockey; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to his community, Pete Sears has been an active
member and coach in USA Hockey, the New York State Empire Games, and is
a member of the New York State Elks and American Legion; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to honor Pete Sears for his
extraordinary athletic accomplishments which are a tribute to his skill,
dedication and commitment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Gordon "Pete" Sears upon the occasion of his induction into
the New York State Hockey Hall of Fame; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Gordon "Pete" Sears.
