LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 175th Anniversary of the found-
ing of Wyoming County, New York, celebrated on May 19, 2016

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the
noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 175th Anniversary of the founding of Wyoming County, New York,
celebrated on May 19, 2016; and
WHEREAS, On May 19, 1841, 13 members of the Wyoming County Board of
Supervisors voted to divide the County of Genesee to create the County
of Wyoming; the inaugural members of the Board included: Oliver Hodges
from the Town of Attica; Isaac Pierce, Jr., Town of Bennington; Clark
Sanford, Town of Castile; John Smith, Town of China; Brian Johnson, Town
of Covington; Ira F. Pratt, Town of Gainesville; Joseph Currier, Town of
Java; Thomas Durfee, Town of Middlebury; Labanah Winchester, Town of
Orangeville; Truman Benedict, Town of Perry; Eleazer Baldwin, Town of
Sheldon; Allen Fargo, Town of Warsaw; and Daniel Wolcott, Town of Weth-
ersfield; and
WHEREAS, The citizens of Wyoming County were actively involved in the
anti-slavery movement and the AMERICAN CITIZEN, an anti-slavery newspa-
per that was established in the Town of Warsaw in 1836; and
WHEREAS, Today, Wyoming County continues its steadfast commitment to
enhancing the quality of life for all of its residents while, at the
same time, ensuring a safe, peaceful, and educational climate for indi-
viduals and families to thrive; and
WHEREAS, Since its establishment in 1842, Wyoming County has had many
great traditions that its citizens enjoy to this day; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth
and change, Wyoming County continues its commitment to enhancing the
quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive business, institu-
tional and educational climate, and providing all essential services;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 175th Anniversary of the founding of Wyoming County, New
York, recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in
the life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Wyoming County Board of Supervisors.
