LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Sheriff Gary T. Maha upon the occasion
of his retirement after 49 years of distinguished service to Genesee
County

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished officers and citizens who would devote them-
selves to public service, demonstrating great courage and diligence in
providing for the care and welfare of the citizens of their communities
and this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
command the respect and admiration of their community for their exem-
plary contributions and service on behalf of others; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Sheriff Gary
T. Maha upon the occasion of his retirement after 49 years of distin-
guished service to Genesee County; and
WHEREAS, Gary T. Maha earned his Associate degree in Police Science
from Genesee Community College and his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Crimi-
nal Justice Administration from Empire State College, State University
of New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1972, Gary T. Maha graduated from the 91st Session of the
F.B.I. National Academy in Quantico, Virginia; throughout the years, he
furthered his education by attending numerous law enforcement and
corrections training courses; in 1995, he graduated from the F.B.I. Law
Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (L.E.E.D.S.); and
WHEREAS, In 1966, Gary T. Maha started his law enforcement career as a
civilian dispatcher/teletype operator with the New York State Police in
Batavia, New York; one year later, he was appointed a Deputy Sheriff
with the Genesee County Sheriff's Office, Batavia; and
WHEREAS, After two years, Deputy Sheriff Gary T. Maha was made a
Senior Investigator, and was placed in command of the Investigative
Session; in 1977, he was promoted to Chief Deputy, third in command of
the Sheriff's Office and in charge of the Criminal Division; and
WHEREAS, In January of 1988, Chief Deputy Gary T. Maha was appointed
to the position of Interim Sheriff by then Governor Mario Cuomo, and was
subsequently duly elected in November of 1988; since then, he has been
re-elected to six successive four-year terms; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to his profession, Sheriff Gary T. Maha held the
position of President of the New York State Sheriffs' Association and
served as the Vice Chair of the Criminal Justice Information Services
Committee for the National Sheriffs' Association; and
WHEREAS, In 1998, Sheriff Gary T. Maha was appointed by former Gover-
nor George Pataki as a member of the New York State Law Enforcement
Accreditation Council, and two years later, he became part of the New
York State 9-1-1 Board; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Sheriff Gary T. Maha serves as a member of the
New York State Law Enforcement Accreditation Council, the New York State
Executive Committee on Counter Terrorism and is co-Chair of New York
State Counter Terrorism Zone 10 (Genesee, Wyoming and Livingston Coun-
ties); he also holds the position of Chairman of the Genesee County
Traffic Safety Board; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable public servant, is also a participant of the
Genesee County Magistrates' Association, the National Sheriffs' Associ-
ation, the F.B.I. National Academy Associates, and the F.B.I. Law
Enforcement Executive Development Association, as well as the American
Correctional Association; and

WHEREAS, Devoted to the community in which he lives, Sheriff Gary T.
Maha held the title of President of the Kiwanis Club of Batavia, and
currently, serves on the Board of Directors for the Kiwanis Club of
Batavia; and
WHEREAS, A proud alumnus of Genesee Community College, Sheriff Gary T.
Maha is a vital member of the Genesee Community College Ventures Commit-
tee and the Genesee Community College Criminal Justice Advisory Commit-
tee; for his steadfast and unremitting commitment to the College, he was
inducted into the Genesee Community College Alumni Hall of Fame in 2008;
and
WHEREAS, For his sincere dedication and substantial role as a communi-
ty leader, Sheriff Gary T. Maha has been the recipient of numerous
awards and accolades including the 2008 Distinguished Citizen Award by
the Iroquois Trail Council, Boys Scouts of America; in 2012, he was
inducted into the Pembroke Central School Alumni Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Susan, and his two
daughters, Kelly and Catherine, all of whom feel privileged to be a part
of his life and rejoice in his accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those dedicated
public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to the preservation
of order and the protection of others are worthy and due full praise for
their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Sheriff Gary T. Maha upon the occasion of his retirement after 49
years of distinguished service to Genesee County; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sheriff Gary T. Maha.
