LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Marilyn Bitterman upon the occasion of
her retirement after 40 years of distinguished service to Community
Board 7, Borough of Queens
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Marilyn Bitterman upon the occasion of her retirement after 40 years of
distinguished service to Community Board 7, Borough of Queens, to be
celebrated at her last District Service Cabinet meeting on Friday, June
24, 2016; and
WHEREAS, For the past 40 years, Marilyn Bitterman rendered faithful,
conscientious and valuable service to Community Board 7, Borough of
Queens; and
WHEREAS, In January of 1976, Marilyn Bitterman began her illustrious
career working part-time with Community Board 7; in 1984, she started
working full-time, when she was offered the title of Assistant District
Manager and maintained that role until she was appointed District Manag-
er in January of 1988; she will officially retire from that position in
August of 2016; and
WHEREAS, Through the years, Marilyn Bitterman has enjoyed working in
the most diverse community in the world, and has had the pleasure of
assisting on various events such as the Lunar New Year, the Chinese Moon
Festival, the Korean American International Fair, and Hindu Temple
events; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her tenure, Marilyn Bitterman has dealt with a
wide variety of situations and problems, and has successfully assisted
immigrant populations in adapting to their new community; she also works
with various city and state agencies preparing literature in Korean and
Chinese so that the new businesses coming into the area are aware of
city and state regulations; and
WHEREAS, In her capacity as District Manager, Marilyn Bitterman served
with loyalty, honor and distinction; and
WHEREAS, A true public servant, Marilyn Bitterman has served on the
Queens Traffic Safety Board and has been a member of the Borough Presi-
dent's Flushing Meadows Corona Park Coordinating Committee, the turning
point initiative which addressed health care priorities for the borough;
and
WHEREAS, Devoted to the young people in her community, Marilyn Bitter-
man was instrumental in raising significant funds for youth programs
through the Flushing Fantastic International Street Festival, and served
on the Northeast Queens Network with the Administration for Children's
Services on programs dealing with domestic violence, foster care and
culturally sensitive projects; and
WHEREAS, Currently, this remarkable woman sits on the Community Advi-
sory Boards of Flushing Hospital and New York Presbyterian Hospital
Queens, where she has chaired the scholarship committee which awarded
financial scholarships to the children of hospital employees who are
going to college; in addition, she is a member of its community benefits
committee which is working on two major New York City Department of
Health and Mental Hygiene projects dealing with breastfeeding and child-
hood obesity; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Marilyn Bitterman volunteers her time and energy
to the College Point Corporate Park development, the Cooper Cary Study
for the redevelopment of downtown Flushing and waterfront, plus the
Willets Point area; and
WHEREAS, In 2000, Marilyn Bitterman graduated from the Citizen's
Police Academy, and presently, holds the title of co-President of the
Bay Terrace Garden Jewish Center; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, Jack; her two
children, Noel and Tracy; a son-in-law, Michael; and three grandchil-
dren, Gabriel, Sadie and Cassidy, all of whom feel privileged to be a
part of her life and rejoice in her accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, In her official acts, Marilyn Bitterman was governed by a
keen sense of duty and always showed a unique grasp of human problems;
during her tenure with Community Board 7, Borough of Queens, she earned
the admiration, esteem and affection of her colleagues; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Marilyn Bitterman has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Marilyn Bitterman upon the occasion of her retirement after 40
years of distinguished service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Marilyn Bitterman.
