LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of YWCA of
Niagara

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the YWCA of Niagara, to be feted with a
year-long celebration; and
WHEREAS, Staying true to its mission of eliminating racism and
empowering women, the YWCA of Niagara is part of a national and interna-
tional movement working to advance the quality of life for women and
their families; and
WHEREAS, In 1915, the YWCA of Lockport was established in Lockport,
New York; in 1996, the agency expanded into nearby towns, cities, and
villages to become a county-wide provider of services to the community,
therefore, the name was officially changed to the YWCA of Niagara; and
WHEREAS, The YWCA of Niagara provides numerous critical programs and
services to women and girls, including housing for the homeless, pre-
school and school age curricula, recreation and sports programs, summer
camp, alternatives to domestic violence and sexual abuse, counseling,
and women's leadership development; and
WHEREAS, In addition, the YWCA of Niagara has facilities and offers
programs throughout Niagara County, including administrative offices in
Lockport, New York, shelter and transitional housing and early childhood
programs in Eastern Niagara County, and Carolyn's House in Niagara
Falls, New York; and
WHEREAS, Recently, the YWCA of Niagara merged with the YWCA of the
Tonawandas, which will provide more services and transitional housing in
the City of Tonawanda, New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the YWCA of Niagara; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the YWCA of Niagara.
