LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the School
of Nursing at Suffolk County Community College on May 15, 2015
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate an enduring
pursuit of excellence in higher education for the youth of this noble
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the 50th
Anniversary of the School of Nursing at Suffolk County Community
College, to be celebrated at a Pinning Ceremony, on Friday, May 15,
2015, at the Michael J. Grant Campus, Brentwood, New York; and
WHEREAS, The nursing profession has witnessed many changes over the
past 50 years; nurses have increased in importance, their roles have
grown considerably and the field has made prominent strides over the
past five decades; this is evident from the way they dress to the tech-
nology they use and their relationship with others in the health care
environment; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of the last 50 years, Suffolk County Communi-
ty College (SCCC) has grown from a student body of 24 graduates in 1965,
to more than 200 today; and
WHEREAS, The School of Nursing at Suffolk County Community College
offers several programs leading to an Associate in Applied Science
(A.A.S.) degree; the Practical Nursing Certificate Program at SCCC is
designed to prepare students for entry into practice, as well as provide
opportunities for students seeking admission into Advanced Placement
Registered Nurse (RN) programs; and
WHEREAS, Currently under the visionary guidance of President Dr. Shaun
L. McKay, and Associate Dean Dr. Cheryl Shaffer, the School of Nursing
at SCCC stands proud and prominent, always looking to the future and the
needs of those it serves; and
WHEREAS, The dedicated faculty at SCCC facilitates the acquisition of
knowledge, skills, and attitudes by creating a supportive environment,
and by utilizing adult learning theory throughout the teaching-learning
process; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that when an
educational institution of such noble aims and accomplishments is
brought to our attention, it should be recognized and applauded by all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the School of Nursing at Suffolk
County Community College on May 15, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, and Associate Dean Cheryl Shaf-
fer, Suffolk County Community College.
