LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION Memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim May 2-9, 2015, as Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) Awareness Week
in New York State

WHEREAS, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder character-
ized by fragile bones that break easily; it is also known as "brittle
bone disease"; a person born with this disorder is affected throughout
his or her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, There are different types of OI with a range of severity from
mild to life threatening; and
WHEREAS, Because there is no cure for OI, treatment focuses on mini-
mizing fractures, the surgical correction of deformity, reducing bone
fragility, and maximizing mobility and independent function; and
WHEREAS, Increased funding for education and research are needed to
help find more effective treatments; and
WHEREAS, The Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation is declaring May 2-9,
2015, as National OI Awareness Week; board members, staff, medical
professionals, and volunteers are joining together to focus attention on
OI in an effort to increase awareness; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim May 2-9, 2015, as
Osteogenesis Imperfecta Awareness Week in New York State; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York; Angelo and Kim Collazo; The Alle Shea Project; and The Osteogenes-
is Imperfecta Foundation (OIF).
